It was truly something to be a teenager & early adult between the fall of the Berlin Wall and the fall of the World Trade Center. That’s not just a nostalgic idealization of youth; we were in a moment that’s impossible to explain now.

E metam a paz podre no cu.

A graph showing developed countries’ “Life Expectancy Versus Healthcare Spending Over Time from 1970 to 2014” with the US widely diverging in the early 1980s. Somebody has affixed Ronald Reagan’s head with a little arrow to that point.A graph showing “Top Marginal Tax Rate from 1966 to 2014” on the Y axis with a dramatic drop in the early 1980s from 70% ultimately leveling out at about 35%. Somebody has affixed Ronald Reagan’s head with a little arrow to that point.A graph showing percent increase since 1970 in the annual cost to attend the University of Illinois, the median household income in Illinois, and the minimum wage in Illinois, with tuition and fees widely outpacing the other two in the early 1980s. Somebody has affixed Ronald Reagan’s head with a little arrow to that point.A graph showing “Income Gains Widely Shared in Early Postwar Decades but not Since Then,” showing the income of the top 5% far outpacing the income of the median and bottom 20% beginning in the early 1980s. Somebody has affixed Ronald Reagan’s head with a little arrow to that point.
