Rugby's not a big sport. Expansion is hampered by short sighted leadership at the international and national level. But it doesn't help when sports writers can't be bothered to write a para or two about the tier two countries. www.theguardian.com/sport/2026/o...

There’s no ignoring the holders but what of the hosts, the All Blacks, France and even England? Here’s a rundown of all 24 teams taking part in Australia in October 2027

Tbh, I don't think anti-intellectualism in Britain is the preserve of the populists and Far Right. We don't have to go back many years to see how the centre sneered at the left

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.

Yet another symptom that academia is fundamentally broken. Even taking into account the AI slop flooding into applications, this represents a massive amount of person hours in the drafting and evaluating of these proposals. And to what end? A dysfunctional job market.

Which is why I have an apparently hard-line and 'extreme' position on AI - never use it, zero tolerance for its use. It's increasingly difficult to maintain this position without serious pushback in academia.

My personal favourite genre of UK political commentary is the very sensible commentator who absolutely acknowledges the need for radical social change and demands it right up to the point when there is a political figure or movement ready to supply it... and then it's just not sensible.

I stand by this. We (academics) are participants, complicit or otherwise, in a system which produces tragic conditions like this. The British media though... They can get in the bin.

Quite a few news items today: - Gatwick without water - Conspiracy theories about Burnham's premiership - the relative 'comfort' of prisons vs. secure hospitals There is a thread drawing these things together and that is the crisis of state competence.

Neoliberalism would be one way of viewing this but capitalism is the more fundamental issue. If you had to develop a technology that would further individualise and atomise thought then you couldn't do better than AI.

This fundamentally conflates ownership with implementation. What has crippled those public services still nominally under public ownership is that they have been subjected to the same forces that the rest have been - marketisation and outsourcing. The creation of pseudo markets has been a failure.

I'm far past feeling the need to defend people who celebrate the deaths of ghouls. We live under overt fascism. The regime hunts people in the streets. We are talking about political actors so foul that no moral reconciliation is possible. They can only be defeated. Mourning them is a betrayal.

I've seen time and time again how, when this critique of the media is made from the left, very sensible people dismiss it as naive populism or conspiracism. Particularly when that critique of the media is extended to questions of economic or foreign policy.

We're almost 20 years on from the biggest crisis of capitalism since the mid-70s and which expressed itself in different political shocks (Brexit, Trump, the rise of the far-right). The crisis remains unaddressed by political elites in most countries and political instability will continue.
