Your spooky season reminder that there is a ~40% jump in pedestrian fatalities on Halloween compared to control days (and a 10x increase in risk for little kids). Closing streets is a great idea. It’s also an excellent night to avoid driving if you can. Source: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

Diorama-like illustration depicting the Pokémon Ditto, while it’s transformed into a human, like in the game Pokopia. Ditto’s sitting at a bus stop together with a Tangela, who’s also sitting at the bus stop, and a little Dedenne. They’re waiting for the rain to pass while another Ditto, transformed into a Magnemite, is floating over the bus stop.

The thing AI will never ever be able to replicate no matter how good it gets at copying is the experience of actually meeting the person and hearing them speak and getting that moment of "OH--*that's* why your work is like that, that's where this comes from!"

Which is what all the best audience members have *always* pined for I'm not trying to tell you AI isn't awful and doing a ton of harm, but it can never never *never* fulfill the core yearning for connection with another being that's always been the source of art's allure

Like, think about the first time you saw pictures of cave paintings. I bet your first reaction was to wonder about the person who painted them, what their life was like, if you and they would be able to understand each other if you met AI simply cannot do that, and it never will

AI has not and will never walk down a rainy street at night. They could hook it up to cameras on a big dumb walking robot that walks down the street and send that footage to whichever model is "in" right now yet that model *still* won't actually have done it

At day's end, it's just a bunch of data being prompted to copy portions of itself in slightly different configurations No amount of scraped art and scanned photos and stolen melodies is ever going to allow something that's built on binary to understand what it's like being flesh in the night wind

More than half of AI investments come from other AI firms. Why care about this circular financing? When a supplier finances a customer, part of its revenue reflects this investment. This makes it harder to gauge what part of the current AI boom is based on organic demand....

There's been ZERO accountability for the death of Renee Good and others at the hands of ICE agents and their accomplices in the US government. It's a disgrace that it's left to the Good family to seek their own remedy in the courts., Here's hoping it's just the first-step. Justice must be done.

We're taking the Trump admin. to court to stop it from allowing endangered species to be killed. In September, FWS director, Brian Nesvik, issued a directive attempting to strip imperiled wildlife of protections from activities that can harm or kill them. In the #ESA, this is known as "take."

Under the new directive, killing an endangered animal is entirely legal — so long as it wasn't "intentional." Without protection against our modern world, so many animals won’t stand a chance. So today we took legal action to challenge this directive and protect imperiled species.

QRP with your pumpkin art. 🎃 Ink on Fabriano Medioevalis, 95 × 64 mm. From 2022.
Silhouette illustration in black ink of a fox standing on and looking down with interest at a pumpkin with a mischievous grin reminiscent of a jack-o-lantern. The pumpkin is still attached to its vines and leaves.

These were three individual pieces I did in 2021. Unplanned, they became something of an accidental sequence. They then prompted me to make the piece in the quoted post, of the pumpkin dance, by way of a conclusion. Ink on Fabriano Medioevalis, each 95 × 64 mm.
Three small silhouette drawings in black ink. The first is of a sitting fox, looking back over its shoulder at a bird on the branch of a little bare shrub. The second has a playful-looking fox, half-crouched, tail in the air, looking at a bird which has just taken off from a branch. The third shows a fox, surprised, its head drawn slightly back, as it seems to have come upon a pumpkin on the ground, surrounded by its vines. It has a face like a carved jack-o'-lantern.

Spooky season is here! 🧡🎃QRP your Pumpkin Art!🎃🧡
Photo of a big painted-on-wood Black Cat Jug Band, with six feline members - one playing a "licorice cigars" box banjo, one a wax paper-and-comb, one a washboard, one a jug, one a saw, and one a washtub bass made from a pumpkin where the long stem is the neck and it's been hollowed out, as evidenced by the f-holes. They're positioned around a bunch of different real pumpkins and gourds and haybales in front of poster's house.

Yep Ppl don't have to be persuaded to accept fascism. If it makes them feel good, if they aren't the outgroup suffering under it? They'll handwave literally anything associated with it, if not fully enjoy it. The only reason the Taliban is floundering now is EVERYONE is suffering, not just women.

Trump hasn't dropped in popularity cuz millions of Americans went "Wait a minute... you're a FASCIST!!!" and recoiled in disgust. It's cuz he doesn't make them feel good, anymore. And that was the whole point. They feel poorer, ignored, and bamboozled. The shitlibs were right. That's embarrassing.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.
