People love to cite this bit from Amusing Ourselves to Death, but it's, you know, wrong. There is a long and ongoing history of authoritarian governments banning books and other speech in order to try to preserve their power. Orwell was clearly correct!
“What Orwell feared were those who would ban books,” Postman wrote in 1985. “What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance.” Who will fear what happens when something resembling the music-making process is a distraction from listening itself?

Surely I am not the first person to do this one.
Two pictures of Dimitri from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The picture on the left shows a young Dimitri early in the game in a well-maintained uniform and neatly cropped hair. "September 30" is written above the image. The picture on the right shows Dimitri five years later, with long hair, bangs covering his face, wearing an eye patch, dressed in a big fur coat. "October 1" is written above the second image.

If you hover over the headings, you'll see that the "Inequality" ranking is not economic inequality, which is what everyone on Earth means when they describe inequality. No, it's "inequality in happiness" in opinion polls.
Inequality
The standard deviation of life evaluation scores. Countries with a higher standard deviation have a wider spread of scores which indicates great inequality in happiness.

I would recommend being *very* skeptical of reporting about Canadian politics from non-Canadian outlets. It's rare for these outlets to have the kind of well-placed sources you'd need to break real news about Canadian governance. paulwells.substack.com/p/carneys-eu...
My best information from Carney’s office, after the last WSJ story about Carney, is that they find the WSJ prone to collecting torqued stuff from European sources who wish their lives were more exciting, and running it as gospel. Today some anonymous sources were telling other news organizations the new WSJ story is more of the same.

We need a moratorium on parry abilities in video games. It doesn't even make sense in a Wolverine game. Parrying is something you do in a sword fight, why is it being shoehorned into so many games that have completely different combat? jeff.zone/posts/marvel...
The boss fights are weirdly skewed even further in this direction. In one case you’ll fight someone with the ability to heal, but if you parry enough of their attacks you’ll build up a stagger meter, eventually stunning the opponent and cutting off the healing while you wail away on them in a Quick Time Event. Rinse and repeat until enemy is dead. If you fail to parry here, the game will eventually pop up the icon for the parry button and essentially say HEY YOU NEED TO PARRY THIS GUY A BUNCH OR THIS FIGHT WILL LITERALLY LAST FOR-FRICKIN-EVER. Even the fights that don’t feature a healing opponent work the same way. It’s just a weird hook for the developers to hang almost every single boss fight in the game on. Considering how wide the default parry window is, you can practically mash it out between your attack animations and get way more parries than you probably deserve.

I really think this kind of stuff makes people less healthy rather than more. This is just a bunch of ways for your devices to give you an anxiety disorder.
Two posts from Hypervisible. The first says:

Apple now gives you a “readiness” score to tell you how prepared you are to take on the day.

Which of course makes me ask what happens if I’m ready.

And the second says:

The watch will also tell you your “health age” and has a “longevity tab.” I wonder if it factors in “living under constant surveillance” as a metric.

People will often post stuff like "Everyone who codes loves AI but artists all hate it" or whatever, but I think about this research from the Game Developers Conference a lot. There's very little difference in attitudes between programmers and artists. The real difference is on the business side.
Generative AI Usage Varies Significantly Based on Role and Discipline

Survey results indicate that over one-third (36%) of game industry professionals are using generative AI tools as part of their job. 30% of respondents at game studios reported using AI tools, which is far less than the 58% of those at publishing companies, support teams, and marketing/PR firms that reported to use AI tools. Business professionals’ use (58%) far outweighs that of most other disciplines.

Sentiment from game Industry professionals reveal that they often balance the use of multiple AI tools for multiple purposes, rather than relying on a single platform or use. The most used AI tool for game industry professionals are large language models (LLMs)—mainly ChatGPT (74%), followed by Google Gemini (37%) and Microsoft Copilot (22%). The most common use is research or brainstorming (81%), followed by daily tasks (like writing emails) and code assistance (47% each), and prototyping (35%).
Opinions on Generative AI Hit a New Low; Over Half of Game Industry Professionals Think it’s Bad for the Industry

According to this year’s survey, over half (52%) of game industry professionals think generative AI is having a negative impact on the game industry, up from 30% last year and 18% the year prior. Workers in visual and technical art (64%), game design and narrative (63%), and game programming (59%) hold the most unfavorable views. About 7% of respondents think generative AI is having a positive impact on the game industry, down from 13% in GDC’s 2025 report. That amount is higher for executives, and those in business operations and services (19% each).

'This isn't a vacation for them…airlines should be paying their flight attendants from the time they show up to work to the time they leave,' Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre told reporters on Friday after being asked for his thoughts on a possible WestJet strike. The airline's flight attendants issued a 72-hour strike notice on July 30, which the airline responded to with a 72-hour lockout notice. Flight attendants say an average of 35 hours per month go unpaid under WestJet's current 'credit hour' system.

Adam Serwer is such a great writer. This is the kind of paragraph you wish you could have written yourself. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
The Trump administration and the conservative movement seem to have taken this advertising strategy and transformed it into an ideology. The result is a secretary of health and human services who posts videos of himself working out in jeans and then presides over outbreaks of measles and explosive diarrhea; a director of Medicare and Medicaid who takes a break from stripping health care away from children to demonstrate how not to do a squat; and a defense secretary who interrupts his day job of starting and losing pointless, illegal wars in the Middle East to announce that he will force testosterone tests on service members. And Americans are supposed to be impressed by these overgrown children showing off their masculine prowess while failing at their basic adult responsibilities.

Man, this is such a bummer, because: 1. I liked Avowed a lot. 2. I think a lot of studios would benefit from re-using work like this to speed up development and lower financial risk, rather than having to constantly reinvent the wheel. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Obsidian released three games last year, two of which did not meet sales expectations, including Avowed, the company told Bloomberg Businessweek. The studio had been hoping to build on Avowed by developing a sequel in a shorter timeframe using the world and technology that it had already created.

Progress on the sequel was going well, and it was on track to be announced within the next year. But in the end, it did not fit into Sharma’s overall strategy, according to people familiar with the game’s development.

I think some of this is probably a bit exaggerated for PR purposes, but on the whole this is a development that I don't think anyone is ready for. The ability for governments to monitor virtually anyone, in real time, potentially retroactively, is an enormous threat to freedom. archive.ph/s6mES
“This is the holy grail of surveillance,” said a European official whose country uses the technology on its cities. “We are able to look for behaviour, not objects — it has created a world of new possibilities.”
Interviews with nearly a dozen people, including former and current intelligence officers and senior security officials in four countries, revealed alarm at this new capability. It de facto transforms the billions of dollars spent on CCTV systems — especially traffic cams — into a keyhole through which their adversaries can scan vast cities and secure facilities to extract patterns and secrets at an industrial scale.
Once an individual subject is identified, these systems can rapidly build dossiers of their activities spanning months. That helps to recreate not just their own patterns of life but those of the people they interact with.

This is specifically about open source software, but I think it's also more generally true, and points to the socially corrosive effects of AI. godotengine.org/article/cont...
AI contributions have the added pain of being demoralizing. Reviewing PRs is already tedious work, but it is rewarding because reviewers generally feel that their efforts are contributing to educating a new contributor (who may become a future maintainer/reviewer). If your feedback on PRs is just being absorbed by a machine and not going towards mentoring a potential future maintainer, it becomes much harder to justify spending your free time on PR review.

Thank you to André to being a rare voice of clarity and reason about this issue among Canadian journalists.
If these patients – most of whom have terminal cancer, heart disease, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and the like – weren’t dying from assisted deaths, how would they be spending their final days and hours?

The most common choice for the terminally ill is VSED – voluntary stopping of eating and drinking. Others opt for palliative sedation, numbed by drugs until their “natural” death mercifully arrives. Some have DNRs, “do not resuscitate” orders that mean if their heart stops, medical staff don’t shock them back to life.

Are any of these methods inherently more humane or moral than MAID? Is allowing someone to starve to death slowly a better end than a lethal injection at a time of their choosing?
