I’m sorry, but how can you have a probationary period after a red card is suspended? Are they just making up rules on the fly?

Three panel comic. In the first panel is a child pointing at a map being asked where is Brazil and identifying it. The second the same thing but for France. Then in the third he is asked "Where is Cabo Verde?" and places his hand over his heart as he says "here".

happy to have this paper published with @draaronhill.bsky.social We looked at extreme rainfall (up to 1000-yr storms) in gridded datasets and the CONUS404 simulation. Continuing the theme from other work, there are many nice things about CONUS404, but it is not a reanalysis of extreme precip. 🧵

Been wondering why NSF isn't spending most of its FY26 appropriation? A $1.5B tech initiative may be the reason. And big cuts to hundreds of research programs could be just the beginning of the bad news. www.science.org/content/arti...

Just going to drop this here since we haven't talked about NSF strangling geoscience for about a month. It's still strangling geoscience (and everything else) with 9% the number of grants issued compared to the 2021-2024 average. grant-witness.us/funding_curv...
Plot from link showing the cumulative number of awards for the NSF geosciences directorate for 2021-2026. 2021-2023 are nearly identical, 2025 is significantly below those years and 2026 is *way* down. We're almost to the last quarter of the federal fiscal year (ends Sept. 30th)

A couple of landspouts last week in far southeastern Oklahoma kept May 2026 from being just our second tornado-free May in the last 75+ years... But this May will still end up as one of our quietest on record in terms of the lack of tornadoes and the lack of overall organized severe weather!
A list of Mays in Oklahoma that produced the fewest tornadoes. May 2005 is the only May since 1950 that didn't have a single tornado in the state of Oklahoma.

Several other Mays only had 2 to 4 tornadoes.

President of MIT not mincing words today in @statnews.com www.statnews.com/2026/05/27/s...
So let me say it as clearly as I can: Without basic scientific research, supported by the kind of farsighted public investment that allows large-scale, undirected, curiosity-driven inquiry, the scientific pipeline will run dry.
In daily life, people may not feel the effects right away, or even in 10 years. But we will feel it. And when someone we love needs therapies that could have emerged but didn't or when other countries now
investing in science can launch new science-based industries or run their societies on vast resources of fusion energy or reap the benefits of quantum computing power or advanced medical breakthroughs, America will wish it sustained its leadership in scientific research here and now.

The second module in the COMET MetEd Radar Meteorology course is published! "The Radar Equations" demystifies common forms of the single point target and distributed target equations for backscattered power. Free registration required: learn.meted.ucar.edu#/online-cour...
Screenshot of a web site that reads:
Online Course:
The Radar Equations
1h 30 m - 2 h
Start
Overview:

Description
The weather radar equations quantitatively describe the process by which an electromagnetic pulse departs a radar antenna, interacts with scatterers in the atmosphere, and then returns back to the radar. In this lesson, we derive the radar equations step by step, demystifying each term. Learners will gain a complete understanding of both versions of the radar equation – one version for a single target, and another version for distributed targets – and be able to describe how changes to each variable impact the amount of power the radar receives. These equations inform both the design and use of weather radars and their data.
Objectives

Define the terms in the radar equation for a single target
Define the terms in the radar equation for distributed targets
Anticipate how adjusting terms in the radar equation affects the power received
Explain, step by step, how the two radar equations are derived
Convert radar variables and equations between linear and logarithmic units
Provide typical values of backscattering cross section for common scatterers
Distinguish between several different variables that are commonly called “reflectivity”
