maybe folks hate the billions and billions (and billions) spent on building the most annoying industry in history, instead of funding a richer, broader and more equitable education system. billionaires seemingly can’t recognize value in anything unless it’s expensive and innovative and has a fat ROI

sorry you’re experiencing this, i feel your pain. can’t offer leads nor suggest anything you haven’t already tried or considered, but having recently experienced a grueling period of unemployment, i’ll just say it helps to remember that in time you’ll be on the other side of it

i think a lot of today’s social ills can be traced to a certain set of privileged people becoming enamored with the idea of abstracting the world into design or engineering terms, and believing that doing so offers a unique insight into Actual Reality

i’m speaking into the void here but does anyone happen to have a suggestion for accessing data on old drives from a 2008 and 2014 macbook? data recovery services are crazy expensive and i think the drives are functional, just need a way to interface with them so i can browse some folders

lots of valid criticisms of the graphics, but the voices are the most unnerving part to me…are they ai generated? is this what zuckerberg thinks ‘humans relating’ sounds like?

it’s the original sin of the book i’m working on, about the common sense of the futuristic. core to my narrative is how the IR inspired a futurity defined by increasing abstraction from Earth, and that to survive, we must abandon its empty aesthetic lures. (basically try to make a case for degrowth)

A screenshot of a Twitter/X exchange. Elon Musk (@elonmusk) tweets: "One of the first things Hitler did upon gaining power was apply aggressive censorship." The tweet has 1.1K replies, 1.7K retweets, 14K likes, and 346K views. Below, a user named "punished evan loves worf" (@eeesssjjj) replies with a single word: "cisgender."

Below the reply, a notification from X states: "Visibility limited: this Post may violate X’s rules against Hateful Conduct," with a "Learn more" link. The interface follows X's standard dark theme, with Elon Musk’s profile picture showing him speaking on stage with an American flag in the background.

i think there’s an unfortunate impulse among journos in the middle/left space to grow increasingly contrarian as a means of differentiation and widening audience. that’s understandable, but combined with the lack of a concrete politics (i.e. beyond “populism”) it leads to perplexing takes like this

This comment on r/fednews really stood out to me. Trump and Musk want people to think they're firing do-nothing "bureaucrats," but they're really getting rid of people dedicated to serving this country and keeping it operational. I hope these stories get told.
I lost my job. USDA Forest Service.

My probation was up next week.

I did everything right. I took a GS-7 role with a master’s degree just to get my foot in the door. I spent years doing seasonal fieldwork for low pay, working in remote places, gaining experience, and building skills, just for a chance at a permanent position. I was about to be a GS-9. I wrote NEPA reports. I conducted field surveys. I worked fire support. I dedicated myself to this work because I believed in it.

Public lands don’t manage themselves. The wildlife, watersheds, and forests we protect don’t just stay protected without people on the ground making it happen. My coworkers and I took on that responsibility, often in places most people never think about but that matter more than they know.

And now? Just like that, I’m out.

Edit: I’ve consistently supported progressive policies and have voted Democrat in every national and local election since I was 18. I do appreciate folks asking, I have some coworker having a serious 'leopards ate my face' moment right now.

there is a very different but equivalently dramatic and strident version of the restructuring of the federal apparatus that i would wholeheartedly support. of course the targets and intention differ greatly, but hey, when the whole thing inevitably comes down, so will the aspects that are evil.

BAREFOOT CONDUCTS Hs seminars on his houseboat in Sausalito. It costs a hun- dred dollars to find out why we are on this Earth. You also get a sandwich, but I wasn't hungry that day. John Lennon had just been killed and I think I know why we are on this Earth; it's to find out that what you love the most will be taken away from you, probably due to an error in high places rather than by design.

Look this sucks but news outlets need to start realizing there's limited journalistic value in sitting in a room and letting a person behind a podium lie to you. You're not holding anyone to account when you do that.
