Martin Doudoroff @doudoroff.com · 22/09/2026On the other hand, this year has been the best year for strawberries in my entire life. After decades of mostly meh, I’ve had ready access to terrific strawberries in 2026, and the curious thing is that a lot are coming from Driscoll’s, particularly their organic line. Something has happened. 020
Martin Doudoroff @doudoroff.com · 22/09/2026In these parts (tri-state), this year has not been good for peaches. They’ve varied between mid and bad. I’ve barely seen any nectarines—I presume the crop failed. 010

Martin Doudoroff @doudoroff.com · 14/09/2026New Yorker City cocktail lovers oughta go check out Echo Lake. It’s really not hard to get—a short walk from two L train stops and one G train stop. Martin Doudoroff @doudoroff.com · 09/07/2026Incidentally, I’ve been using the word “reclamation” for these obscure drinks that are plucked out of old books and given new life or, more often, life they never had in the first place. 020
Martin Doudoroff @doudoroff.com · 09/07/2026Seems the Bebbo is somewhat like the Ensslin Aviation: for whatever reason, it was almost never drunk in the past, but appeared in enough books as filler that some of us latched on to it during the Cocktail Renaissance. The idea (Bees’ Knees+OJ modifier) aligns well with the Petraske school. 120
Martin Doudoroff @doudoroff.com · 09/07/2026Being contentious about naming is an important idea, generally. In this particular case, I’ve found nothing alarming. “Bebbo” is currently in use by UNICEF for a parenting app. Those two syllables may carry meaning in multiple languages (TBD). Bebbo also seems to be an uncommon surname. 020
Martin Doudoroff @doudoroff.com · 06/07/2026Ha ha! He renamed Boothby’s (somewhat peculiar) “French 75” to “Frenchy”. 021
Martin Doudoroff @doudoroff.com · 06/07/2026Not strictly. For example, when he renamed the “Floor Polish” to “Flushing”, it moved down several places. I haven’t sat down to a complete comparison, but so far all the renamings I have seen didn’t stray wildly. 120
Martin Doudoroff @doudoroff.com · 06/07/2026Morten Kjaerulff has pointed out that Vic Bergeron replicated the Bebbo in his 1947 book. 130
Martin Doudoroff @doudoroff.com · 06/07/2026Haigh could’ve gotten it from Jones, but he also might’ve gotten it from Marco & Gale or some other book in the interim. He had amassed a pretty decent book collection for back then. Early days. 120
Martin Doudoroff @doudoroff.com · 05/07/2026The cherry on top is that most of the crap in Hollywood Cocktails then got shoveled into Boothby’s 1934 edition of World Drinks! So, yeah, there’s a “Brown Derby” recipe there! Corroboration! 😜 020
Martin Doudoroff @doudoroff.com · 05/07/2026A similar example: the goddamn Hollywood Cocktails novelty booklet (also 1933) spawned the “Brown Derby” (merely the De Rigueur plagiarized from the Savoy, itself a towering abomination of plagiarism). That one crops up all over the place, including DeGroff’s Craft of the Cocktail. 120
