A tidy collection of Eddie Clarke* recipes from the 40s–60s are now added to Total Mixology. Two books in the bibliography and he even has his own keyword. *not to be confused with “Fast” Eddie Clarke of Mötorhead

Someone posted this vintage nonsense on Instagram for another purpose, but removed from the context of bad science, it kind of encapsulates the human condition. Even the “smartest” amongst us stumble often at reason and judgment, and what greater morons are there than those convinced they aren’t?

Eddie Clarke says “It’s wonderful what Jamaica Rum will do!” Eddie should know! He won the 1947 Bartenders' Guild Competition with his Eight Bells Cocktail-a Jamaica Rum recipe. Jamaica Rum is the coming thing right enough there's no end to the tantalizing drinks you can mix with this most versatile of spirits.
Try it for yourself in the Jamaica Rum recipes in this book. Soon you'll be inventing your own favourites.
Says Jamaica Jo—“Drink the drink the pirates drank in 1661”

Yeah, the problem with books like this is, ok, where did the recipes actually come from? Probably not the “author”. I did locate this similar idea under a different name.
Honey Dew
Shake with ice:
1 oz dry gin
0.5 oz lemon juice
0.5 oz orange juice
0.5 oz honey
Strain into a cocktail glass.

Inspired by F. Monti, I’m on my third Rum Collins this week, and drifting toward the conclusion it’s the most underrated classic of them all. ¡Viva Cuba!
Rum Collins; Build in a bar glass filled with cracked ice: 2 bar spoons superfine sugar, juice of 1 lime, 1.5 oz light cuban-style rum. Fill with seltzer. From Sloppy Joe’s Cocktail Manual 1932-1933, p. 9.

So, has anyone actually tried making one of these? It seems closely related to the elaborate Mint Julep recipe in William’s 1891 book, but expanded with a lot of champagne—probably not literally “a pint” unless the bar glass was close to the size suggested in the drawing.)

Amusing Bartholdi tangent I came across: hotel guests on the hotel’s proto-sightseeing bus. I suspect it was an electric vehicle, with batteries in that box between the wheels. Haven’t yet identified the church in the background.

If you’re interested in rum, exotic drinks, or naval history, “The Rum Never Sets” is a book you’re going to want: it demystifies London Dock Rum and Navy Rum with original archival research. Detailed, but not TOO detailed. You will enjoy reading it, then keep the book on your shelf for reference.

It’s got those dreaded “dashes” in it. Do you still hew to ~1/4 oz lemon juice, 1 tsp simple syrup, to 1-1/2 oz each scotch and sloe?

Another example I have at hand is from this 1949 Albert Pick catalog. “Boston shaker” was surely a term in use, but they felt no obligation to use it. This was not a “set”, either, just the tin portion, which you could pair with various glasses they also sold.

Martin Doudoroff @doudoroff.com · 01/07/2025
This is from the 1953 UKBG book. They label the cobbler shaker as merely a “cocktail shaker”, the French shaker as a Boston shaker, and the Boston shaker as an “American Type Cocktail Shaker”.
