Authors, besides the fact that, you know, your cover artists deserve credit by default, another good reason to prominently name your cover artist is that it makes it clear you hired a human rather than using gen ai. Which is extremely important to quite a lot of readers, actually.

Here's a great example of a debut indie author giving credit to their cover artist/illustrator in a prominent way. Did it play into my decision to sign up for an ARC? Absolutely! And when the author emailed me that ARC? He even included a link to the artist's Instagram! Now that's giving credit

A black-and-white portrait of the American novelist Harper Lee (1926–2016), famously known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, To Kill a Mockingbird. The image is styled as a slightly tilted Polaroid-style photograph with a thick white border. Lee is shown in a close-up, three-quarter view, smiling broadly with a warm, authentic expression. She has short, dark, voluminous hair and wears a dark, collared blouse paired with a striking, multi-strand white beaded necklace. In the bottom right corner, an inset image displays the iconic first-edition book cover of To Kill a Mockingbird, featuring a silhouette of a gnarled tree against a dark green and maroon background. The overall composition balances the personal, spirited vitality of the author with her monumental literary legacy.

When visiting either store, we hope you will experience our affirmation of the critical role that independent bookstores play in supporting the free expression of ideas, through public discourse and the printed word, at a time when such discourse faces increasing challenges.

A graphic with a photo of a building at 33 Union Street in Boston Mass. Text reads: The new store will occupy 3,500 square feet in the historic Yankee Publishing Building in the city’s oldest commercial district. Adjoining the bookstore will be a 1,500-square-foot café operated by Lakon Paris Patisserie. Together with our flagship store in Cambridge, Harvard Book Store will continue to offer the same extraordinary combination of academic and popular books, customer service, author talks, and community engagement that make us a destination for book lovers from around the world.
