Some folks collected lots of eels in rent. And some folks not so many. When John de Huntyngton died in 1350, an inquisition showed that he was owed (among other things) 1 & 1/2 sticks of eels annually from land he held in Ealdyng. That's about 37 eels every year for our man. 🗃️🧪
Meme. Medieval painting of man, richly attired, siting in a throne or high chair and receiving payments from a line of lesser men. He seems like a lord, with his salmon-colored gown and his fussy black hat. We'll call him Afraidrich. He's got a scroll in his left hand, on his lap, and his right arm is leaning on the chair arm. He's holding a bag in that hand, and is also pointing. His face is white like death, and he looks menacing and mean. He kicks puppies.

There is a man half-kneeling in front of the throne, holding a bag in his right hand, and his hat is in his left hand. He's clearly offering the bag to Afraidrich. Behind him, next in line, is a man in a blue shirt with a small chest on his shoulder, like he's robbed an RPG dungeon.

Beside the throne stands a courtier, leaning on a staff w/ a feather in his cap. He's sassy at to his core. At the foot of the throne, is an attentive dog. Probably Afraidrich's kicking dog.

Meme text reads:
"There'd better be
37 eels in that bag"

TOMORROW, I am doing a short talk on a MURDERER which has everything! Knives! Arsenic! Arson! Adultery! Exhumation! Toxicology! Transportation! Broadmoor! Trying to squidge it into 15 minutes has been a trial. But it's online, so come along... www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-cabinet-...

How many eels is too many? Is 26k too many? In the 11th C., fishermen around Hilgay owed the Thorney Abbey monks 26,275 eels each year in rent. And that probably seems like a lot to you. But hey... you're not an abbot lookin' for eels to feed your monks throughout Lent. Are you? 🗃️🧪
Meme. Medieval paining of an abbot, standing in front of what looks to be a lovely tiled wall, and some sort of tapestry. The abbot is dressed in a black robe, and he is carrying a book under his right arm. He holds crozier in his left hand, and he's ready for some pastoral work. The abbot's tonsure is magnificent, and the dome of his head is a walking advertisement for sunscreen. There is a halo around his head, so you know he's the real deal.

The abbot is looking up slightly. His eyes are kind and questioning, and his eyebrows are raising towards the middle in a posture of supplication. He looks quietly hopeful, and if you replaced his book with a pillowcase then he might be mistaken for a well-costumed child at Halloween, asking for candy.

He is not the sort of abbot to suddenly drop his book and attack you with his staff. But he *is* the sort to hide a harlequin romance inside his book of hours.

Meme text reads:
"Got some Thorney monks?
Slip them some eel!"

You can visit the remains of the castle in beautiful Northamptonshire countryside, then pop up the road to Peterborough Museum to see the Tudor exhibition including images of MQoS. And if you still want more, pootle across the city centre to the cathedral where she was originally buried 👸

In the moulding above the tomb of Bishop Blyth at Salisbury Cathedral is a possible mason's joke. We see rose after rose on a vine at the end of which there is a gardener in the act of cutting them down. A comment by the mason regarding the length of time he spent carving them?

For context, this is over 200 years old and was made by prisoners of war with scraps from their meals (and a bit of material). It’s incredible that it’s been made and even more incredible that it still exists #NormanCross

WORLD-FIRST: Ground-breaking research published today in the Ornithologist Journal has, for the first time, translated common UK bird vocalisations into equivalent phrases in the human language. The results tell us a lot! Extracts below... 🧵
The front cover of a scientific journal titled Ornithologist, dated 1 April 2025. The main headline reads: “BIRDS: DECODED - Groundbreaking New Science.” Below that, a subheading says: “What are the UK’s birds really saying? Pioneering new research provides the answers.”

A nighttime photo of a man in Tudor dress standing watching a large beehive shaped clay kiln with flames billowing out of the top. In his hand he is holding a small vertical metal cylinder of about 3 inches diameter, but obviously we have no idea what this is.
