"The author calls it 'essentially' a work of fiction. Its English translation by Jacob Rogers, from Lamela’s Galician, is calibrated to a piano-tuned exactness, yet this adverbial caveat is pregnant with ambiguity." A review of WHAT REMAINS at LARB . . .

Deeply honored to have been able to write about the first three films by French filmmaker Leos Carax for the Criterion Collection. His movies were important to me when I was younger, and they are important to me still. www.criterion.com/current/post...

Three Films by Leos Carax: Vital Signs
With their mix of comedy, ecstasy, and aesthetic strangeness, the French auteur’s first three features grant us access to psychic states that we might not otherwise be able to enter.

I promised you books and good light, and while the light was pretty subtle today, one of the books is stepping up to fill in. three preorders picked up today and tonight’s reading, my #BlueskyBookClub homework.
BLUE SUNSET by Denise rose Hansen. the cover is a painting by Kaye Donachie and called “Like walls the mirrors stand,” oil on linen, a semi-abstract study in blues with what looks like a person asleep in a bed facing the viewer, with swaths of lighter blue and beige suggesting the play of light in a roomWHAT REMAINS by Brais Lamela, translated from the Galician by Jacob Rogers. The cover art looks like a brutalist building with sharp angles and shadows and textured concrete surfaces.THE MYSTERY OF WHAT BEFELL IN THE DITCH by Thure Erik Lund, translated by David M. Smith. The cover is white with the first couple of sentences printed at the bottom. Those are:

Tomas Olsen Myrbråten: Every day, I have to spend a couple long, drawn-out hours at the kitchen table crying. Nothing more than this utterly miserable business: to sit slumped across the table, crying over the awfulness of the world.ACID GREEN VELVET by Grace Krilanovich, the Bluesky book club homework. The cover is red, and a person with shaggy hair is crouched near the bottom of the page looking out at the viewer. a big dog looks out from behind them. drawings of huge flowers sit behind the person and the dog.
