I got up before sunrise to go 18 miles on foot to reach the dam nine miles north of my house, out under the freeway and into the desert. Sun and wind and rocky plains where there used to be a river, egrets hunting the shallow green pools amid the stones. Thinking hard about the future of water.

We lost our dear, dear Trout on Friday 💔 He was the sweetest cat I've ever known, not a mean bone in his body, utterly loving. He also loved catnip, lying in the sun on the back deck, accompanying me when I did yardwork, and cuddling with us at night. We love you so much, Trout. Forever.
