I've talked about the Sameer Project before—an excellent life-saving on-the-ground initiative in Gaza. Since April 2024, they've distributed nearly a quarter of a million meals alone (plus water, medical care, and shelter). But funding has dropped so much that they'll have to shut down without help.

built a spare parts single-speed bike at the local co-op recently and even though it's nearly 110 every day I can't stop thinking about how much I want to go on a bike ride. Bill Traylor (1853-1949), a former slave & Alabama sharecropper, first took up art as a self-taught amateur at age 85, drawing with a pencil stub on salvaged cardboard, & in 3 years did over 1500 drawings that are now recognized as pioneering works of folk & modern art, I mention for no reason.

He might have thought 'How is this my fault? I have no jurisdiction over this.' Maybe he would have said, 'This site was not subject to local zoning, what could I do?' But I think, when he reflected on the suffering that occurred at this camp, just outside of town, that those words would have sounded hollow even to him. Because in his heart he knew, as we do, that we are all responsible for what happens in our community.”
