These are three of the enormous variety of fungi that are currenlty fruiting in and around Hay-on-Wye (where I live). I was lucky enough to get to paint all three from life, while selling prints and cards in Hay castle, and chatting to visitors to the Fungitown festival last weekend #dreamjob
Brown #Roll-rim #Paxillus involutus #botanicalillustration of this poisonous #fungus illustrated from life at this year's annual #Fungitown festival in #Hayonwye. The fungus is brown with decurrent yellow gills stretching down the stipe, and a distinctive brown in-rolled wavy edge. The stipe is brown and there's detritus like soil and dead grass at the base. Cut to white, #watercolour #illustration#Echinoderma hystrix #Fungus illustrated from life at this year's annual #Fungitown festival in #Hayonwye. This beautiful little white fungus does not have an English name. It is covered all over in brownish black scales, including on the stipe. There are small dark red blobs where the white gills touch the cap edge, these are fluid produced in a process called #gutteration. Cut-to-white #sciart #naturalhistoryillustration done in #watercolor #naturalhistoryillustration #Scaberstalk #Bolete #Leccinum cyanobasaileucum #naturalhistoryillustration completed at Fungitown in Hay on wye. It has a very domed dark brown cap, a textured stipe (with soil at the base) and pale spongy hymeium. The #naturalscienceillustration shows slug damage on the cap where pale flesh shows through the brown colouration. Cut to white and illustrated #byhand

The UK has dug up many of its orchards and now imports 70% of its apples, often from across the world. Planting apple trees in our gardens and community spaces - and protecting those we already have - can cut food miles, soak up CO2, benefit wildlife, and help save traditional apple varieties🍎
