I’m writing the pathfinding for my 2D #CLI #rust game and in there you can move multiple blocks so I added a comment: // there is a chain of blocks (a blockchain) that can be pushed to squish the player I think I’m pretty funny. But I just asked Claude to review my code and it came up with this.

Strengths

- The three-stage approach (squish immediately, A* pathfinding, push blocks) is well-structured
- Good reuse of existing A* implementation
- Effective handling of block chains ("blockchains" - nice pun!)

The 90s were a golden age for efficient binaries—hardware constraints forced developers to optimize. Now, we ship layers of abstractions on top of each other. Lately, I find myself wanting a self-imposed performance limiter, just to build leaner, more efficient software. Even for desktop apps.

This is an interesting read about the Fish shell team's experience porting fish from C++ to Rust. There's some good, some bad, but an improvement in the end. It's also interesting to see them highlight using Rust will (hopefully) encourage more contributors fishshell.com/blog/rustport/

Back when I was an IC I wrote this package: github.com/dominikwilko... Look at the intro in the readme: I was clearly miffed by some decisions made above me. Now that I’m a CTO I’m keen to not make those mistakes with my people. Best to listen to them.

Why

You know when you’re in one of those 5PM meetings after a long day of crazy stuff and the HIPPO (highest paid personal opinion) comes up with completely arbitrary solutions to complete arbitrary problems that will mean you’ll have to stay late and you start to get angry? This is because the stress causes you to sacrifice higher function like sympathy and social etiquette in order to keep lower functions like logic and speech working.

When running a node application and your boss wants you to add funky little things that add no value but bring your applications performance down you want to start sacrificing those functions when the demand gets too high in order to keep lower functions alive.

CustardJS simply keeps track of how many requests are running and starts sacrificing sub functions you specify according to a maxCalls property set by you.

We should normalize compiler errors on windows when building #CLI apps that need raw mode. Having to use external crates that add a lot of complexity just to deal with both platforms isn’t going to help us make the ecosystem better in the long term. Luckily there is an alternative for users. #rust

Double spaces after a full stop in a sentence. People still use them. Why? It all started many years ago because typewriters (the machines before computers) used monofonts and punctuation wasn’t super visible so people added two spaces at the end of a sentence. Reminder: slate.com/technology/2...
