That’s not to say there shouldn’t be any built-in history or background to a dungeon, just that it should all directly be intractable or relevant to what exists there now in some way (which is obviously the case with most good dungeon design)

Wasting the players time. In a TTRPG, you’re muddying the waters by describing layers upon layers of history and set dressing if it’s not actionable in some way. The players attention drifts or fixates on something that can’t be manipulated.

Hard agree with this take. Layers of history are only as interesting as they can be directly interacted with. This is very much in direct contrast with video game design. There a history is useful because the concept artist can craft a visual space that communicates it through osmosis without

It’s my preference too. I always point to the Electrum Archive whenever this comes up. It’s the one system that has a ton of negotiation and ephemeral outcomes, plus it feels structured enough to be actually playable.
