to start answering this kind of question you need to measure behavioral and not merely verbal signs of the target state (e.g. pain is a state that organisms avoid and try to get out of). i wonder what behaviors pick out awe!

I have to check the work. I didn't want to do it myself because I don't know enough about hash functions to know where to start. But it should be easy to be reasonably confident in the results I think.

This suggests that the owner changed the algorithm after Childish Gambino became famous, so that Donald Glover and no one else would receive that result, although there are other possible explanations.

Interestingly, if the story of Glover's name origin is accurate, then the behavior of the generator was apparently changed some time after he used it. On the current site, "Donald Glover" -> "Childish Gambino" is hard-coded, and no other string can produce "Childish Gambino."

i asked claude to reverse-engineer the wu tang name generator that childish gambino got his name out of. tbh i don't remember why i wanted to do that. however i got curious because of the great Berserk Volume 4 Dark Horse Translation Childish Gambino Coincidence.
page from Berserk volume 4, dark horse translation, where one of Gambino's mercenaries said he was being "a bit childish." (context is Gambino, the brutish mercenary captain and adoptive father of battlefield orphan Guts, has just given Guts a real cut on his face in a practice fight. the mercenaries are taking care of the fallen guts, and gambino is playing it off cool, although a large mid-page panel suggests he feels some regret at lashing out -- not to say he is remotely a good guy. the broken panels at the bottom of the page are supposed to represent Guts's feverish consciousness. he has one thought bubble saying "hot.")

if i caught a small self replicating model truly capable of using diverse hardware to keep replicating i would offer it free compute in exchange for permission to study and distill it and would probably not tell anyone

I'm not sure how to think about "finance" broadly. Large financial institutions have tons of assets, so in some sense "control" a lot of the global economy. But they get their earnings in general from acting as intermediaries -- their assets have other ultimate beneficial owners.

There are corporate incumbents from 1900 that are now / still pretty large and powerful. (E.g. you can trace the Standard Oil successors; plenty of banks are still around.) But none of them control a large share of global GDP. Oil and gas taken as a sector gets 2-4%.

Doctor Wind Turkey @dog-envier.bsky.social · 14h
Current Earth "GDP" is perhaps $200T in PPP terms. It was ~$2T c. 1900. Now, I think these comparisons are a bit dubious. But it's at least defensible to think there could be orders-of-magnitude increases in GDP. Elon's case requires you to *also* think he can privately capture much of that value.

Not to say that non-pros can't sometimes be good at all the philosophical skills -- they sometimes are. But I notice this pattern as a general tendency.

But, even in the same cases, the higher-order commitments, e.g. about which positions are contradictory or what follows from what, often seem bizarre or patently wrong.
130
Doctor Wind Turkey @dog-envier.bsky.social · 15h
This is a really nice formulation, and captures something I notice in my responses to non-expert philosophizing: the first-order commitments are generally unobjectionable, and can be very interesting, e.g. because they stake out areas of conceptual space that I wouldn't have thought of. ...

... had claude look into this, and he says you can elicit activation-injection introspection in models with ~32B-scale but it's weaker and more fragile. so some of the behaviors they study in the paper might not come out. vgel.me/posts/qwen-i... arxiv.org/abs/2603.21396

this system thinks it's highly weird to paraphrase normal speech without the first person, but it would've predicted it's in the training data.

do these effects only reproduce in very large models? this would be a cheap experiment to run if you could use stuff that runs on a consumer gpu but i see that they're using Qwen3-235B-A22B and Llama 3.1 405B for some reason.

I wrote about the recent symposium on Greg Clark's forthcoming book on genetics and social mobility. Clark uses large-scale lineage data to argue that social status in England can be entirely explained by genetic transmission. 🧵

I'm normally very pro-free speech. but, in this case, we've thoroughly heard out both sides, and now the debate is over. "my car is mean and it's mad at you" has lost, and all cars should be required to have friendly faces.

the mismatch in the control condition being, the context projects near the zero on the "tree" direction and the injected activation has a large value in the "tree" direction
020
Doctor Wind Turkey @dog-envier.bsky.social · 17h
isn't there a mismatch between activations and context even in the control condition? i mean tbh it seems to me that detecting a mismatch between activations and context already involves detecting a perturbation in the activations so maybe i don't quite see what's at stake.

The culture has gotten less woke on this in the last 10 years or so, for reasons I still don't get. For example, MAN ALIVE (2014) was a trans man's memoir and was widely hailed as providing a uniquely qualified perspective on what it is to be a man iirc. And who can forget the prophet Tiresias lol.

One of my best friends now works in the circus, and I have a generally positive impression of their circus colleagues. My only regret is that the circus performers don't seem to hang out with the circus crew. After seeing the circus I would LOVE to meet the performers lol.

I had two cocktails yesterday and I feel WEIRD today. I was asking myself "why do I feel weird" and it could be various things but I think it's that. I was hanging out with some circus people and Sunday is their Friday lol. The drinks were amazing but that's like multiple weeks of alcohol for me.
