I do like how much that ILM documentary on Disney+ mentions cheats, time saves and ‘getting away with’ things. All creative work is a magic trick, and I think we can be shy about that, like the work is diminished by admitting that it’s done in spite of limitations and constraints.

But now we are not just printing books with trees. We are not digitizing for minimal impact. We burn coal & fossil fuel at alarming rate to rationalize the benefits of the latest online tech. We'd never print books on human skin. Bad example, we're a terrible species. Never at that quantity maybe.

I think the internet was not a bad idea. But despite attention it gets (for cults or how to build a bomb) it visibly serves as a moderate reinforcement loop, on main. Just as printing press was mainly used for bibles. Then less visibly at the time, William Blake etc emerge. I doubt he'd be on here.

Will the organized & "extremely visible online" resistance always skew moderate on core principles? ✅️ We've all seen pro-violence actors—because hot takes earn clout—but is the rest of their approach sound? Or does it just resonate enough at superficial level to hit notes for visibly online folks?

So much of what we want or aspire for under capitalism is subject to the Epwn Msk's of the world NOT coveting the same thing on a larger scale—or fucking it all up. Why attach to digital tokens as if they hold importance? Our human resistance does not need a perfect or recognized name to continue.

I remember how badly I coveted the @dodgethis handle on Twitter. ...How often I checked to see if that low activity account would be purged: "Have they made it available again, yet?" Now, it would be worthless to me! There is a lesson in that.

Wait no rich person who is NOT currently at the top of their corporate ladder wants to lose that access to power? Oh darn! I just didn't want the next line of successors to spend so much time shadowing überfascists: learning their tactics through osmosis (& usually heaps of inflicted trauma afaik).

What if ai assistants could shield all of us other humans from having to deal with fascist executives and imperial state-craft operators? A room full of Civ2 advisors that are chatbots editing JIRA boards. They could manage comms with us ON OUR TERMS by acting as buffer where next in command sits.

Don't be the one dunking on those who seek comfort during these times, is the message I guess. I have my own feelings about myself seeking comfort that are rooted in the pretty toxic ideologies I was raised on. So I guess, as always, self-reflection is important, too.

Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

We are all so worried about next 5 years, it's hard to speak clearly about pretty alarming trends for the next 25 years. Social media does not seem to be helping with that anymore. Remember when climate change was front and centre of discussion? Now that impending future is yesterday's news.

The Atlantic's @dkthomp.bsky.social wrote about a worrying trend in the economic data—the unemployment rate for recent college graduates is unusually high. One theory: Firms are hiring fewer grads into white collar jobs, and using more AI. *This* is what an AI jobs crisis might look like.

This. Also there are similarities, but so much subjectivity exists in what gets me engaged in playing a game across various states of hypo/hyperfocus. Or compared to my preferences when I'm able to achieve controlled attention. I barely know latter state of being since having kids—theyre some1 else.

Don't trust an app is more legitimate or treats it's employees fairly simply because it has been monetized well and applied that financial power to secure access to resources.

I love games and they are still somewhat guilty of this, though the arbitrariness of achievements in games seems clearer. It's more the language learning & gamified education apps that I am targeting here: e.g. where concept of black belt from a martial arts academy evolves into Duolingo "streaks".

We should not have let corporations or apps become the arbiters of personal achievement. Immediacy and intimacy of phone interaction has oversaturated the balance we need to weigh between legitimacy & ease of access.

I would be a lot more happy about paying more for games if I knew that revenue was actually going to the devs who worked on it. Getting residuals would fundamentally change the structure and nature of this industry.

Why celebrate May Day? This year, in taking the streets, we are showing each other who is prepared to fight: "Take a stand—we'll be there, too." Every year, we are showing that we are part of a story greater than ourselves, stretching back centuries. Life reinventing itself in defiance of death.

Paternalism is the weirdest framing of social interactions. It is definitely applicable & useful to view society this way. But when I look back at the advanced medical ethics course I took, weak paternalism feels so much grosser than utilitarianism in terms of motivation: even when result is valid.

pushing framing outside of transactional lens is vital. If they demand receipts for social interactions, these 2 Qs must be asked in same breath - who got what support? - for how much relative effort or resources? conservatives often hold firm when progression or extraction dominate conversations.

dodgethis.ephemera (he/him) @dodgethis.bsky.social · 27/04/2025
today, ppl hit many capitalist pitfalls that predictably fail to better society though often amoral w/o context. extraction focus: extreme couponing, frugal habits from surviving on welfare or during wartime, etc progression focus: entitlement to generational wealth, "earning" a place at the table

dodgethis.ephemera (he/him) @dodgethis.bsky.social · 27/04/2025
we need to draw a line between: - meritocracy - return on extracted value from one's effort (REVE) - moral standards & ethical views approaching "equitable REVE" is only better than meritocracy if every person has a voice in defining what's fair. Both merit & morals cannot filter ideas for change.

dodgethis.ephemera (he/him) @dodgethis.bsky.social · 27/04/2025
It seems like people who want social change have no answer when people conflate "getting out what you put in" and "meritocracy." Here the conflation protects conservative views: "doesn't my inherent quality merit the compensation I receive? why is someone else worthy of larger proportional share?

dodgethis.ephemera (he/him) @dodgethis.bsky.social · 27/04/2025
privilege does not make you better able to solve the problem, but access to privilege still provides LESS DISTANCE from power to shape society. western thought has no adequate framing to escape this loop—outside of equitable practice & iterative social changes—to empower those who are left unheard.

dodgethis.ephemera (he/him) @dodgethis.bsky.social · 27/04/2025
if you are unhappy about the status quo as an individual, you as an individual are challenged to apply effort to solve the systemic problems. despite all the talk about equity, it is still disproportionately white men & women who apply privileges to secure communal resources towards making changes.

modern worldviews teach us two conflicting principles: 1. generally, people only get out what they put in to work, society, etc 2. society has no obligation to cater to everyone's need fairly! It "does its best" with the average able-bodied white male cishet voter locked in as its target market

My heart goes out to the Filipino community in Vancouver after a car drove through a street celebration for Lapu Lapu day yesterday night. Such a sad loss of life, and painful to see it happen in this way—when people were celebrating overcoming their hardships together as a community.

Simon doing some great work here highlighting and digging into why this is the case (not directly based on what we wrote), why we expected it to be so (we didn't create the game), and what the underlying issues are (video game writing = not unionized). (And I'm seeing the film tonight! stoked!)
