I had high hopes for Shane Black's take on Doc Savage when he said he wanted it set in the 1930s. However, a reading of the script explains why Dwayne Johnson called Doc a "fucking hilarious weirdo." Black's Doc might have been a hit, but he wasn't "Doc Savage." Updating the aides worked though.

You're right. I don't think anyone, save the chronologists, are concerned with continuity. (For example, everyone has done a John Sunlight story.) I just wish Conde Nast would let real authors have a crack at a novel and give @davallone.bsky.social & other writers another crack at a comic series.

Don't hold your breath on Doc Savage. After recruiting James Patterson, Conde Nast seems determined to kill the character rather than find anyone competent. On the other hand, I am so ready for new Have Gun, Will Travel. I hope those rights are easy to get.

It would be even more cool if Shane Black and his partners rewrote their script. They made Doc Savage into something he was not. I'm ok with updating the aides. I welcome that. But that Doc? I wouldn't want to see Ritchson portray him.

I felt the same thing before I read the screenplay. I didn't dislike the characters that he (and his co-writers) had surround Doc, but they interpreted Doc's upbringing (& subsequent adulthood) in ways I never would. Maybe he thought the changes would ensure the film would get made?

And Doc Savage's Fortress was there from the start...

Doc Savage said slowly: "I was far away when my father died."

He did not explain where he had been, did not mention his "Fortress of Solitude," his rendezvous built on a rocky island deep in the arctic regions. He had been there.

It was to this spot that Doc retired periodically to brush up on the newest developments in science, psychology, medicine, engineering. This was the secret of his universal knowledge, for his periods of concentration there were long and intense.

The Fortress of Solitude had been his father's recommendation. And no one on earth knew the location of the retreat. Once there, nothing could interrupt Doc's studies and experiments.

You and many others. As far as comics: author @davallone.bsky.social made her an important part of his Ring of Fire (four Dynamite issues with @daveacosta.bsky.social ) and there was the Pat Savage one-shot in 1992. I think she'd helm a very interesting noir comic today.
