Working on a book about the Greek myths to process family trauma and living in a dying empire. Still finding joy where I can!

Love that El-Sayed has the thoughtful insight of a lifelong fan, while Rogers' "response" is a paragraph of someone else talking about the Red Wings and then him saying some random shit that was clearly written by an intern who asked Claude to write about hockey

every time the media gets to ask Abdul El-Sayed a question they ask him to answer for something Hasan Piker said because they once did an event together. Yet the media never asks Republican candidates to answer for Elon Musk, the #1 Republican fundraiser this cycle and of all time. It's odd!

The Detroit Free Press allowed readers to submit their verdict on who won the debate between Dr. Abdul El Sayed and Mike Rogers— but the only two people who said Rogers won decided to include anti Arab slurs in their letters in addition to abject lies. So the DFP refused to publish them.

Also, the flawed Athenian democracy literally fell because a bunch of xenophobic dipshits insisted on unrestrained power for their homeland and had contempt for and felt free to abuse allied states. All while facing the challenge of another, even more authoritarian power.

it falls mostly on institutions (corporations, government, the medical establishment) to be judicious with antibacterials. They have abdicated that responsibility for money and convenience and now we are paying the price. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. (and stop buying antibacterial soap)

Debris @docfuran.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
And ultimately, we need to be a lot more thoughtful about how we use our tools to fight disease, because we have not been responsible and we have not considered the consequences of abusing one of the most important medical advances in human history. That responsibility isn't entirely individual -

4. There are certainly systemic issues leading to antibiotic/antibacterial resistance - effective handwashing, completing courses of antibiotics, not overusing them in clinical settings, etc. and all of these need to be addressed as well. However, all of these issues are part of the same ecosystem -

Debris @docfuran.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
3. While there isn't necessarily a direct link between antibacterials soaps and plague antibiotic resistance, the causes of antibacterial resistance among bacteria are all interrelated and propel one another, so ANY antibiotic/antibacterial resistance begets MORE antibiotic/bacterial resistance
100
Debris @docfuran.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
2. Triclosan resistance is found in related Yersinia species (doi.org/10.1016/j.lw...), and the resistance mechanisms developed for one antibiotic can enhance the resistance mechanisms for other antibiotics, particularly for closely related bacteria

Debris @docfuran.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
1. We use different antibacterials for consumer soaps than we do for plague bacteria. HOWEVER, we DO use the same antibacterials for plague and other common bacterial infections, like streptococcus and pseudomonas. Resistance is a numbers game so the more bacteria , the more likely it is to develop
100
Debris @docfuran.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
The result - more antibiotic-resistant plague! Cool! Good thing those soap companies made so much money creating tuberculosis and plague bacteria that we can't treat! Love that for them. Now, there's of course some caveats to all this:
100
Debris @docfuran.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
More triclosan-resistant bacteria in hospitals means more bacteria that can trade plasmids with other antibacterial-resistant bacteria, mixing and matching genes until they have collected a bunch of antibiotic-resistant genes like tiny Thanoses. They can then trade these plasmids to Y. Pestis
100
Debris @docfuran.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
What does this have to do with consumer antibacterials? Well, triclosan, the main antibacterial used in consumer soaps is also used in hospital settings, so the resistance transferred from bacteria on patients throughout the hospitals (this is an oversimplification, but this is a thread)
100
Debris @docfuran.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Eagle-eyed readers will note that the article in the last skeet describes how Y. pestis can gain antibacterial resistance from other bacteria because bacteria can share loops of DNA called plasmids. Plasmids can contain genes for all sorts of things, including antibiotic resistance - multiple genes

Debris @docfuran.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
But wait! What does this have to do with plague bacteria? Don't we use different antibacterials for soaps than we do for plague infections? Yes we do! That said, plague bacteria (Yersinia pestis) have been developing antibacterial resistance for decades: www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

Of course, that didn't stop companies from aggressively marketing to consumers and pushing the narrative that "antibacterial soap" must be an improvement on regular soaps - it's got extra stuff in it! These companies would have seen all the same research as anyone else, but it made them more money

Debris @docfuran.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
The mass use of antibacterial soaps for the consumer market has lead to massive antibiotic resistance including in tuberculosis, we've known this since 2000! doi.org/10.1021/bi00...) and anti-bac soaps aren't any more effective than regular soap! We've known this for years! doi.org/10.4315/0362...
