Yeah the thing that tech workers as a class want and don’t have is autonomy and control over the use of their work product. This has traditionally been something that labor voted on with its feet, but that’s not viable given that digital work is endlessly reproducible.

software and technology specifically should not prioritize seniority as the most important factor of retaining employment and this absolutely wrecks the pipeline for new workers downstream

One of the writing tips that got drilled into me early on was to excise the word “society” from my vocabulary. This guy may have received similar advice and reacted by subbing in “mainstream.”

This AI shit is so groundbreaking it got google to acknowledge fuchsia again
• Large Scale Codebase Migrations and
Optimizations: Argon agents are working on migrating C/C++ codebases to Rust across Google - scaling from tens of thousands of lines in core libraries like re2, libgav1 up to 800K+ lines for the Fuchsia Zircon kernel. Given the criticality of many of these systems, such large-scale rewrites are undergoing rigorous automated and manual auditing, emulation testing, and review before rolling out to production.

Solving AI and online gambling. Ok. If you want to do it, you must go to a remote, high-security building, navigate a maze with extreme air conditioning and huge arrays of computers with flashing lights that run programs which gradually drain your bank account but occasionally produce great riches.

It’s clearly very intelligent, with the ability to monitor everything about the ship’s crew. But it doesn’t. Makes me think there must have been some major privacy event in the StarTrek history. Something so bad that a computer that can remember your drinks order became a taboo.

StarTrek’s ship computers are fascinating from a privacy perspective. Picard has to tell the replicator how hot he wants his tea, every order. When an advanced alien abducts someone, the computer can instantly report “Lt. Worf is not on the ship”, but it has to be asked.

I went to a talk by qntm. I asked him about what fiction gets at the experience of LLMs the most. He said Douglas Adams with all the objects that can think and talk for no reason and sometimes you have to have a conversation with your elevator to get it to work today. Anyway my IDE is mad at me.

Any auditor who actually managed to officially disagree in a 10-K with one of their biggest clients would likely find their career cut short soon after

Jeremy Diamond ☕️ @dmnd.me · 10h
It’s probably underrated that, despite the many controls in place to mitigate this, there is still a very clubby relationship between big companies and their external auditors. A lot of work goes into helping the client do what they want (even if you think they’re pushing the limits).

The inside baseball part that interests me is listing this in securities filings as a risk factor. Because if it ever got into Item 9 — “Changes in and Disagreements with Accountants on Accounting and Financial Disclosure” — there would be A Problem.

Yeah, people will inevitably project onto them. Can’t do much about that but we shouldn’t help them to do it. It’s also not simple because, at least the way Anthropic articulates it, the model that users interact with is already playing a character.

A big downside of the top AI guys being deeply influenced by sci-fi is that they don't realize that giving non-organic characters personalities is a narrative requirement and not much more. If Marvin was just an android and not the paranoid android, he would be boring.

this is not just work ethics for a lot of people. for a lot of people, working on machine learning is something more like a religious vocation. i think the hard thing to convey is how viscerally satisfying it is to get one more fact about how the Pile of Numbers Which Acts Like a Guy works.
