An Abundance of Katherines*
The Game Theory of Baby Naming

'Cornell University†

Abstract
In this paper, we study the highly competitive arena of baby naming. Through making several Extremely Reasonable Assumptions (namely, that parents are myopic, perfectly knowledgeable agents who pick a name based solely on its "uniqueness"), we create a model which is not only tractable and clean, but also perfectly captures the real world. We then extend our investigation with numerical experiments, as well as analysis of large language model tools. We conclude by discussing avenues for future research.

Specifically, the idea that “inspiration” is something solvable by a centralized entity that will accrue returns to scale is insane on its face
This is a replay of what happened with websites.
Publications used to be scarce, dependent as they were on printing presses and delivery trucks; then, distribution became free, and the web became abundant. That, by extension, meant the most important problem to be solved was discovery; the companies that solved discovery aggregated demand, giving them power over suppliers, and in the case of Meta and Google in particular, incredible advertising businesses (this is Aggregation Theory).

What remained scarce, however, was actually doing things on the web, or in apps. What is happening with agents is that the ability to do stuff is becoming abundant; what is scarce is volition. The problem to be solved is not discovery, but rather inspiration; the companies who solve inspiration will gain power over every entity that has things that need to be done. Once the user is focused on solving a problem, every app and service required to do so is abstracted away into an implementation detail, mere suppliers facing the fate of publications under Aggregators, scrapping for crumbs from the Agent, the ultimate gatekeeper of not just user demand, but desire.

Fool's Expertise is particularly perilous when discussing catastrophe, which nearly tautologically involves long chains of causation that transcend domains: fully understanding one link does not imply understanding the chain. (This is why when the NTSB investigates an accident, the NTSB Go Team consists of experts across many different domains: they know that a catastrophic accident may involve failures across several different domains, interacting and cascading into broader system failure.)And to say it clearly: to the degree that Al-inflicted doom relies on pathways into the real world, experts on those pathways must be consulted. Is Al a cybersecurity threat? Please talk to cybersecurity experts - who will be quick to point out that the ballyhooed OpenAl escape depended on a pedestrian failure of containment. Are we concerned that Al is somehow going to fashion a novel pathogen? Let's please consult experts on viral synthesis - and listen to why they think that the fears are misplaced. Or maybe it's nukes that we're afraid that Al will get a hold of? Great news: seven decades of living with the possibility of global thermonuclear war gave us not just extensive safeguards but also huge wells of expertise to draw from!

Down the street at D’s Thirsty Beaver bar, Danielle Rees is doing a test run on serving breakfast. Her bar is directly across the street from the field where the data center is supposed to go, and she wants her staff comfortable with 6 a.m. shifts if the construction crews start showing up.

Rees moved to Maysville last year from Florida, after driving through the area and deciding on a lark to see if there were any bars for sale. There was: the Thirsty Beaver on Germantown Road, a biker bar with a stuffed beaver stationed at the front door. Indoor of this bar with beaver art on the wallOwner of the bar pouring drinks

Related: this disconnect warps many people’s conceptions of what counts as beautiful If they’re on your TV or movie screen with spoken dialogue, either their look is very particular and part of casting, they’re older experienced actors, or they are in the 99th percentile of attractiveness.
“Character actor seems way more fun. I would rather be a Wallace Shawn or a Paul Giamatti.”

“As would I! But female character actresses are rare, and most of them are also beautiful, and/or triple threats. Try to think of one who isn't. It's hard.”

“Florence Pugh instantly came to mind.”

Gotta keep this part of the interview rubric hush-hush
"Next is presence. Are they credible? Are they energetic and confident?" she quer-ied, continuing, "Active listening is also im-portant. Ask yourself, 'Is this someone I can stick in front of a client on day one?' If not, are they coachable? You'll get some people with the valley girl talk and those who are very poised. Those are easy. But [with those in between, you're in danger of false negatives.... If they have strange twitching habits (the audience laughed), we just can't go on with them. They're just not right for us." Cutting through the laughter, she quickly added, "Don't write down that the person twitched, though! If you have something like that, say it verbally. It should not be in the permanent record."

Lowering her voice, she reminded the audi-ence, "We're a government contractor, so atany point they can make us turn over our [hiring] records. And that's not the reason we shouldn't hire someone-because they have a nervous twitch."

More from that book
The next candidate was Abe, a white male with "great" case performance. Yet as Dash noted, he was a "fit wild card." Abe was a martial arts black belt. When Dash asked him to describe the difference between two genres of marital arts, the interviewee got up from his chair to demon-strate, and this scared Dash. He reenacted the interaction for the group, physically backing away from an imaginary Abe as he described the candidate's demonstration of arm strikes. "I was like, whoa."

Steven replied, matter-of-factly, "He'd need training in communication."

Dash raised his eyebrows. "I think there's definitely some body art under there," he laughed.Lois joked, "Well, we need diversity!"
The group rejected Abe.

A Katseye explainer has hit the SNL subreddit and I am only slightly more informed than I was five minutes ago Perhaps we will have more information when SNL posts the host + musical guest promo reads on YouTube later today
A background of Saturdays Musical Guest Katseye

Hello this is a huge psa if you have not listened to Katseye and on Saturday it will be your first time listening to them. What I have to say is that they have 6 members but 2 of their members Manon and Sophia are currently on hiatus for mental health and it's just the four of them performing.

I would say that their music is okay but it's not like kpop kpop it's more like American music with some elements of kpop. My favorite songs of theirs are Gameboy and Gabriela. Their new music is okay but their old music is way better but lately they've gone like a more mature route. I haven't been keeping up with them that much in their new era but their youngest member is currently 18 and was she was 16 when they were formed back in 2024 and was 17 last year when their whole aesthetic changed to make them more mature. What I am to say is that I'm pretty sure their label hybe started to make their music more mature when she's in the middle of being 17 and having her learn suggestive choreography.

Also the Hiatus of Manon is talked a lot in the fandom because people are saying she was forced to take the hiatus by Hybe. Also people are saying she was mistreated by the label and she hasn't been with them since February 2026 and that's why she's currently on her hiatus. Finally Sophia is their leader of the group took one as well on August 2026 and I don't know why she took one but she said it was for mental health and wellness.

Just wanted to inform you guys about Katseye.

By the way, since she mentioned this was a pre-K report card, here’s what was measured on the first progress report for my son’s equivalent. Got it yesterday. Social and emotional skills is most of it! Because that’s what’s important for 4-year-olds to learn so they can share space together!
Learning Skills for Success

Demonstrating self-control and accepts responsibility for behavior

Follows rules, procedures and directions

Works independently

Cooperates with one another (e.g. taking turns, sharing)

Follows playground rules and proposes solutions to conflicts, seeking adult assistance when necessary

Participates positively and cooperatively as group members

Uses time effectively to produce quality work

Shows awareness of others' feelings, needs, and property

Listens to others without interrupting

ELA
Match some uppercase letter names to their printed form (FLS 2.4)

Math
Recognize and name a few written numerals under 10 (CC1.5)

She even went on to say that it’s important for parents of boys to just ignore the things they aren’t yet good at. As if those things just correct themselves. And, uh, citing Thomas Sowell is a CHOICE
Katherine Boyle

Fwiw, we love our kid's Catholic school and teachers. The state requires these
assessments, which is another lesson: you can never fully opt out of the system, but you can you focus on the things that matter.Katherine Boyle

Too many of you see a boy who's good at math and bad at "circle time" and are proving my exact point.

"Many things" doesn't mean he's a monster kid- it refers to a range of difference that's beaten out of boys as "deficiency" "weirdness" or "hyperactivity", which is what state assessments are looking for at four.

Many a good parent with an active or different kid is sent to the doctor and returns with an ADHD diagnosis and drugs.

Praising boys for the things they're good at is good, and ignoring the things they're slow to learn is an important part of parenting boys.Katherine Boyle

Finally, here's the best parenting book that no one has heard of but everyone should read: the great Thomas Sowell talked about gender difference in early childhood before anyone, and how detrimental it can be to focus on the "lateness" of boys versus their unique gifts. Highly recommend to boy parents and only wish he had written more.

Oh, that reminds me of the time a GP at Andreessen popped off with this wild take
Katherine Boyle post

My son came home with a Pre-K report card; I read it and was thrilled. My husband read it and was baffled.

I read it and anchored on the lines that really matter: "He excels quickly in all his math assignments and has mastered the math and reading concepts presented.”

My husband focused on the extra full page on "social emotional growthạcommentary and looked confused the whole time. "What does any of this mean?"

"Nothing," I said. "Ignore it."

And then that evening we explained to our son the lesson that is going to get him through his life: "People will put up with many things if you are excellent at math. You're so good at math. We're proud of you.”

And that was that. There are many important posts going viral today about the tragedy of young men. Combatting the systems that seek to destroy their nature begins in the home, and it begins young.

I don't care about the "social emotional growth" of my sons because I know what values we're instilling in them. Telling them what really matters begins with dad and mom.

The family can be a reprieve from all the nonsense. It requires constant vigilance, but it's the first step in preparing them for the madness outside.
