Lots going on! If you're nearby, come nibble cider donuts in an orchard at dusk & listen to poems with horses. Or hold a candle against the murk of late October & hear folkloric poetry & prose honoring witches. Details at www.dmgordon.com. If you're far away—Bluesky far—just wanted you to know.

I'm reading The Children's Book by A. S. Byatt, with @simonhaisell.bsky.social, his Footnotes & Tangents on Substack. 1890's British countryside. Burne-Jones & William Morris, adult fairytales, ceramic art, dark puppet shows, lush & lyrical. Forest & shore. Shadowy, twisty, heavenly. #literary
A painting by Frederic Lord Leighton, from Wikipedia, a woman in a gauzy orange dress, curled in a dreamy nap, soft, long brown hair framing her, Not a lot of information about the painting, but it feels very much like the era. The painting is called Flaming June—the month? the woman?—She feels to me, without knowing, Rapunzel.

This one hurts. Gloria Steinem Is, as of yesterday, no longer with us. She had a clarity. She was a beacon, a true great, and it was wondrous, back then, to spend weeks with her in residence at Hedgerbook on Whidbey Island. #Gloria #feminist #activism #writers #friends

Surprise yourself this week. Spread your wings! Buy a book of poems. #Poetry #Poem #PoetryCommunity #WritingCommunity #Writing
Reading a poetry book
is and isn't
like
eating a box of chocolates.

You don't have to go in order.
(But you can.)
You might select a poem
or two
...or three...a day.

You can read the same poem over and over—no calories.

It's okay to put half-eaten ones back in the box.

I have bad #travel karma. Recently to P-town for a reading: high winds, rough chop on the ferry; drenched walking to my (seedy) hotel; too wet & exhausted to eat. This is the moment everything changed. Brunch, a secret patio. A fabulous meal. Only got better from here. (See comments.)

Boston. You make me proud to be American again. Honoring our heritage unblinkingly, with hope. Boston strong. This elegant, moving statue. #Boston #freedom #American #statue
In a small courtyard, an elegant statue of a seated Black woman in a white gown from a different era, She is holding an open birdcage and the birds have been set free. While it's specific, it also speaks broadly.

Google says: "Unbound" is a 14-foot bronze statue in Boston by artist Harmonia Rosales. Located at King's Chapel on Tremont and School Street, it depicts a Black woman holding a cage and releasing birds. It honors 219 individuals enslaved by past members and ministers of the historic church.

I write literary fiction. I always fumble when someone asks what makes it "literary." Here's Alan Garner quoted by Simon Haisell. ❤️ Literary means words ... that invite the reader...to partake of the creative act. There can be no one meaning for a text. Even that of the writer is but an option." ❤️
"I would say that, because of its essential ambivalence, "literature" is: words that provoke response; that invite the reader or listener to partake of the creative act. There can be no one meaning for a text. Even that of the writer is but an option." Simon Haisell quoting Alan Garner.

#CharlesRammelkamp wrote a rich review for Loosestrife for Porcupines. 🙏 The last poem begins "Write to me in your unpracticed hand. Do not text. A postcard with a stamp. Write until you run out of room"— (The full poem is in Alt Text) Wonderful surprise in my mailbox. He sent a postcard!!! ❤️❤️❤️
A postcard on a striped cotton blanket, handwritten from a book reviewer. "Hi Diana! I enjoyed reading your book! Can't say I know what it all means—the book of life? But I am not frenzied. Seriously, I'm looking forward to getting my thoughts on paper. Thanks again, Charles.

MOSSES AND IVIES

Write to me in your unpracticed hand. Do not text.
A postcard with a stamp. Write until you run out of room—
up the sides in smaller and smaller letters, dear little e’s,
outrageous y’s and confusing s’s; send a photograph
of the cathedral, the stonework of generations— masons,
oxen, horses—and say how you got there, where once
the rich brought chairs to worship while everyone else stood,
and now the forest grows, blackthorn in the sacristy,
mosses and ivies, a goodly (godly?) stream murmuring
over the flooring stones, all that green, as if that were always
the plan, of the forest I mean. Tell me you aren’t lost,
that your brain isn’t frenzied, that it’s real, that you haven’t
heard the latest, that in the roofless nave you understand,
finally, what it all means, for I do not. Write to me.

A poem in three stanzas

THE SECOND COMING— William Butler Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
