Keynes books ranked, holistically and subjectively (recognizing compendium type volumes have pieces of others)… only ones I know: 1. Economic Consequences of the Peace 2. End of Laissez Faire 3. General Theory 4. Tract on Monetary Reform 5. Essays in Persuasion

not that you should expect anything more than rank idiocy from this pair of racists, but the idea that whiteness means a "high trust" society of "social cohesion" is some of the stupidest shit i have ever heard. these people live in a fantasy land that you could dispel by simply opening a book.

Something that interests me is “conspiracy theories” that are easily verifiably true but still get treated like nonsense. The best example is Area 51, which is very real and we’ve known is real for a long time but still gets treated like a joke. Weather modification is in the same bucket.

This is a great line. Keynes in 1940 calls politics “the survival of the unfit”… sort of a Keynesian “the worst get on top.”

I’ve always had this fascination with the falling down barn aesthetic (which I am affected by too) and I think it’s a lot like identification with ruins of castles or temples. It’s an odd mix of backward looking and but also looking forward to some kind of past-informed better future. A mixed bag.

In principle I support the death penalty and find it unfathomable that people who support maintaining a military—a practice that results in the deaths of countless innocents—can’t support the death penalty. But the way the U.S. is so fucking incompetent and racist at implementing it is horrific.

Finally listening to The Price of Peace and it’s really good. I’ve been putting it off because of something Carter argued about Keynes that rubbed me the wrong way that of course I don’t even remember now. A dumb way to pick books 🤦 He is spectacular at contextualizing Keynes’s work in Bloomsbury.

Libertarians can always say their ideas have never been tried because their ideas have never been perfectly applied, as they judge it. But we have a 60 year low in the federal workforce along with attempts at impounding Congressionally mandated spending. What is it? nypost.com/2026/09/30/w...

Lots of great articles in this one, including papers on Buchanan and transportation economics; Alexander Hamilton and Tenche Coxe on tariffs; and Walter Lippmann. The latter two I’ve had the privilege of reading drafts of and seeing presented.

lmao… this is the point where you wonder, is Friedersdorf: 1. A complete moron to the point of uselessness for being genuinely blindsided by this or 2. Playing dumb and getting off the Rufo train before it spectacularly explodes into open fascism There’s no option 3 and there are many such cases.

We reach for the twentieth century authoritarians that often (though not always) flared out pretty quickly after overreach and violence, but as a non-Rome guy, Rome seems like the really important one to understand. Certainly the Founders thought so.

So infuriating to think back to the Rufo et al. CRT and DEI and Claudine Gay witch hunts and their protests that it wasn’t about racism, and then fast forward to today where he’s struggling with “the Indian Question” along with a literal publisher of fascist material—but it doesn’t even register.

A sneak peek at some new work that’s brewing from @mdtremblay.bsky.social and me. We look at the long arc of Buchanan’s views on fiscal federalism as it changed from intergovernmental grants to the economics of secession—and the changing normative stances underlying that work.

It’s not an assault on democracy but having a public hearing on a big proposal that affects the community doesn’t seem like something to get mad at them about. Unlike many meetings the great thing about public hearings is you don’t have to go!

As an academic, it feels like some colleagues have lost the ability to engage deeply: they don't want to read an article unless it directly answers a question they already have... basically like using a chatbot they only want an answer to a current issue & not to actually learn anything or explore.

This might be right, I don’t know that it’s true at all that farm land is better land use than data centers. But it would really be swell if economists of all people acknowledged these are hard questions because WTP≠ATP, externalities, transaction costs, etc to say nothing of public choice issues.

Romeo and Juliet is probably the most adapted-to-other-worlds story *ever* and I honestly think we can enjoy an Old English version and trust that Eggers knows neither Shakespeare nor the residents of Verona spoke it. I have learned to trust Eggers. I’ve never been disappointed myself. YMMV.

A major part of the issue is the enormity of what used to be called the libertarian to alt-right pipeline. Libertarianism isn’t dead at all it was just never the shiny pro-liberty thing a lot of people credulously believed. It was anti-state, anti-egalitarian, and in many cases anti-democratic.

Pulled everything but the turmeric from my backyard bed today and it was a cool opportunity to see how big they’ve gotten. Maybe hard to tell here but they’re up to my chest. Sometimes green growth up top can be deceiving but it’s thick and has been steady all season so I’ve got high hopes.

Important reflection on U.S. schools from Nikole Hannah-Jones. I’ve always thought the term “school choice” was strange because choices are made throughout the public school system as well, albeit with unequal opportunities and resources to choose. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/20/m...

I think that’s the heart of this, comprehending the cruelty. You could comprehend an outburst after October 7th that built to war crimes, but then ended. That would be wrong, but comprehensible. You could understand why it could unfold that way. Three years of open genocide is incomprehensible.
