As a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.

hopefully a longer essay about this later, but it's striking how familiar the situation of the japanese public during the russo-japanese war is. no at home experiences the war directly: they learn about it via what they read. and they are extremely active, extremely angry, and extremely misinformed.

Again: can these people hear themselves? “Ai safety spaces.” WTF are they talking about. Ai safety is, at its root, making Ai tools respect legal and societal norms. These people aren’t doing any of that. Is this crowd working to set conventions on things Ai needs to do/not do consistent w/that?

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

one really important fact that I think a lot of people who aren't super close to this stuff don't realize is that transformers/LLMs were NOT what OpenAI et. seq. (taking Anthropic as an OpenAI spinoff) were founded to work on, and were developed elsewhere. Caught them largely by surprise.

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

What @ironspike.bsky.social was describing in the previous post sounds somewhat like "bucket shops" which were declared illegal a century ago. The premise was simple: come bet on the ticker tape! Yay stonks! The reality: bucket shop owners manipulated their patrons and were more like casinos!

I read the story. There felt like a lot of red flags (no homework - no referencing standardized tests) for someone who was very involved to miss. Regardless I am sure we both agree the kid was not well served by the system. A systemic failure.

Every DC school shows how well they are doing on math and English so if you know your kid is going to an underperforming school you might naturally overindex on trying to ensure your kid stays at grade level.

I am a (very) imperfect parent. The part that startled me was that she didn't know how her child was doing on math for... years. DC schools are different than NYC schools I am sure but our kids get tested *constantly* so not knowing seems strange to me.
