the word used there was 義父 which refers to any “father” who you’re related to by law rather than blood, so the translation was technically ambiguous they should’ve gotten it based on context but instead they flipped a coin and lost

I have to share my sayolara nerding with the world. I got to this part in episode 9, and got jumpscared by ncbi BLAST, a tool for comparing DNA, RNA and protein sequences to a massive database. So ofc I had to go onto the real blast and check out a couple of these sequences to see what they were

I've been wanting to write a short story about my experiences with Japanese cooking lately - the odd feeling that comes with needing to look up recipes any native mom would know because they were never passed down to me, on sites that helpfully explain what each ingredient is.

I had to watch myself and my brother become culturally white simply because the forces of history decided we didn't have the option of becoming anything else. I've had to listen to racist remarks about my culture from people who didn't even know I was a part of it because of my skin.

It was so isolating seeing kids around me form cultural cliques and knowing that I couldn't have that, not being able to speak my family's own tongue because of decisions my grandfather, a man who I never met, made decades ago.

I want to read a story about how war uproots family trees and plants them in unfamiliar countries, changing the lives of its members forever. My grandma was brought to America because of war, and now me and my mom are the only JAs for dozens of miles.

I'd love for someone to reply to this and tell me there's a book I need to read, but it's really disheartening to me how every time my hafu mom tells me about a book about being Japanese-American, it's about the camps. It's always the camps. I've yet to find a book that feels like it's about me.
