Not to say they are wrong about ALL their grievances, just the ones they are loudest about. The west in general isn't very well represented. The election is over before they start counting the votes in the west so most platforms are built to central and eastern Canadians.

I really enjoy scifi and speculative fiction, but fantasy is really hit and miss so trying to sort through all the genres stays important, but tricky to me. 😅

What I find really muddies the water is speculative fiction. A lot of people refer to it as SF which I take a shorthand for science fiction. Speculative fiction overlaps with both fantasy and scifi, making a bunch of Venn diagrams that have fuzzy borders.

Usually scifi asks "What would the world look like if we were suddenly able to X?" Fantasy usually asks, "What if we had always had X?" Fantasy is cool, but fragile because why didn't anyone think about how metal is rocks in AtLA? They had like > 1000 years.

I have seen people spin it as an outpost you stay at before going into Niflheim, others as Christian hell, and other people interpret it as place of rest where you go when there is no more fight left in you. There is no definitive answer so people can just create their own stories and I love that.

It's so poetic that very little of the mythology is known, there are so many gaps that can be filled with your own stories and ideas. Like for instance everyone knows Valhalla is for warriors, but what about Hel? Everyone else goes there and the best we have is a Christian's interpretation of it.

Pagans are always depicted as warlike barbarians, but the first gift their god gave them was magical runes to cast charms. The runes were just letters, and then they made words and invented poetry. Like communicating is magic. Storytelling is magic. It puts ideas and motivations in peoples heads.

I understand the point of immutable operating systems, but I cannot stand them. The biggest reason I switched off windows was because I wanted complete control of my machine. Yes I broke things when I started, but I learned SO much from those experiences (including how to keep system backups).
