Mon petit service web (que personne n'utilise parce que sans doute beaucoup trop niche) étant écrit en #OCaml, je n'ai pas eu de problème aujourd'hui.

It seems that not only is it possible to find people who are experts in #MirageOS without having been involved with it for years, but also to completely miss the point of #unikernels when using #AI (since, when it comes to "security" and unikernels, it is the handmade aspect that really counts) […]

@edwintorok to be precise, I started `bstr` mostly for github.com/ocaml/ocaml/issues/14069. I really would like to clone me sometimes.

@edwintorok that's actually one of my deep goal (and bstr is an experiment where I can easily get metrics) but I never have the time to prepare something (like an RfC) and propose something to OCaml. I really would like but too much to do on much more interesting topics.

I think we still have some rooms to optimize and it probably about some cold execution paths (still to remove `caml_apply`) but it's nice to see that we can do to optimize. It reminds me the time where I made decompress 🫠

Another cool stuff is to take the advantage of CPU. #OCaml is pretty dumb about optimisation, your CPU is not. The idea is to load a 8-bytes word for smaller values (such as int16 or int32) and let the CPU to be smart enough to fusion this "mov" which can appears three or four times.

Dinosaure @dinosaure.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy · 15/08/2026
From my experiment, OCaml has a huge penalty: caml_apply. When OCaml does not statically the arity of a function, it uses this helper which has a real cost. It's why one of the key optimisation is to expand the call site :tinking […]

I found a rabbit-hole about encoding/decoding binary data in #OCaml, it results to a DSL which is the fastest about decoding things (like IPv4 packets). You can see the implementation here: github.com/robur-coop/bstr/tree/bin I will make a release soon!

Five unikernels later, we’ve confirmed (to some extent) that the #GADT we introduced two years ago was indeed a good idea. And that’s to be expected! I already told my manager at the time that it takes an average of 10 years to get a good API…
