Not that ancient, but: 2004, Boston Red Sox/John Kerry 2016, Chicago Cubs/Hillary Clinton If any Democrats considering a run are from Cleveland, Milwaukee, Tampa etc, they probably have to be appointed to an international body instead

I realize how I sound but can't help myself: you conflate the '98 and the '94 midterms. Clinton's first midterms saw the GOP take both chambers, but in '98 impeachment fatigue gave Dems an okay night. D'Amato had beaten Javitz in'80 and survived Dem waves in '86 and '92 before losing to Schumer

This is the number-one failing of NPR's Planet Money. In a process that is regrettably common among access-journalism reporters, they whitewash ideological or even partisan academics as merely "interested in free markets" or "in support of limited government." All for just five minutes of audio!

Germany’s former foreign intelligence chief arrested on suspicion of espionage and attempted treason
The arrest of August Hanning, a former head of Germany’s foreign intelligence, is unprecedented and could damage the country’s intelligence relationships with allied nations.

I was skeptical about Star Wars episode 10, but given the original trilogy was apparently about how the Viet Cong were right, the prequels were how Bush Knew!, and the sequels were Love Is Love, we'll get to see the Lucasfilm take that egg prices are too high and data centers lead to the dark side

Common Grackle stoned to death by school children
Quiscalus quiscula versicolor
Boyd Elementary School, Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania, 1980
We flew together in large flocks whistling and chattering and squeaking to one another of news and of nothing at all over large fields of corn ignoring the motionless human sentries meant to frighten us. We followed behind churning plows and foraged through their bountiful wake for worms and insects and mice and near water we plucked leeches off the backs of turtles who stared at us dumbly. We nested in trees by the humans and ate from their scraps which were plenty and the braver among us stole right from under their noses sometimes as much for sport as for sustenance. For this we were considered a nuisance. Some of us would raid the nests of smaller birds and even attack and eat them which I believe now is the sin for which I have been punished.

Melville sold okay, but for Typee/Omoo; Moby-Dick was completely unknown until the Faulkner generation rediscovered it. Same with Stendhal. There may be a greater tendency for authors who are presaging the next big literary shift (I have no idea if this happened in moments earlier than Modernism)

Slightly responsive: but the exceptions make a list that's more fun. Danielle Steele and James Patterson sell 100x the good writers today and will never be literature. Faulkner, Fitzgerald & Hemingway were completely outstripped by (wait for it) Zane Grey
