So many tornado warning takes, so little time but I've always wished the the criteria for warnings was stricter so that QLCS, shelf gustnados, and other brief spin-ups are covered by SVR

Broad Branch Road NW doing its thing
Soapstone Branch overtops Broad Branch Road NW, sending brown and white water rapids spilling over a wall and into Rock Creek. A nearby "Road Flooded" warning beacon is dark despite dangerous, swift water racing underneath it.

I'm somewhat surprised by just how acrid everything looks and smells this time. Warm white balance, no filter.
Lower visibility through wildfire smoke looking south down Connecticut Avenue NW near Van Ness.

Tricky with lots of irregular fireworks brightness and infrequent bolts so tonight's were mostly rapid 2-4" exposures with a higher aperture.

The extreme heat has just led to a concrete section of I-97 in Maryland buckling north of Benfield Boulevard. The concrete blowout extends across the travel lanes from shoulder to shoulder. @ianlivingston.bsky.social

Everything you ever needed to know about the typical DC 100-degree day (100 or plus) in one chart. Somewhat interestingly, the hourly average never hits 100 but there are obs in between hourly reports as well. Only June days may have a bit different structure will try to check. #dcwx #vawx
The progression of the "typical" day reaching 100 degrees or more. Benchmarks include 90 by 11a and 95 by 1p.

In DC, a big slab of concrete fell off a bridge/retaining wall onto I-395 under 7th Street SW earlier today. Similar occurrence in NYC on the Trans-Manhattan Expressway earlier this month.

All avenues and streets around the Lincoln and WWII memorials closed for a presidential tour of the not so blue Reflecting Pool. The motorcade just drove down into the empty basin.

Auto enforcement warning: An illegally driven, lane-splitting, no plates motorcycle passed between my car and this speed camera, generating a ticket for my plate even though I was below the speed limit entering a left turn lane. How many others have been wrongly cited and forced to cough up a fine?

For the last few weeks, rush hour hasn't been normal. This time of year volumes should be surging. Instead, it's been flat, like mid-winter. Daily backups and congestion… yes. But trip counts on major corridors don't match March averages. (1/4)

The nice thing about the daily Air Force loop-de-loops is that they're done late at night, at lower altitudes than any other helicopters, and in war Hueys which are the among the loudest invented. Thanks.

Bypassing the "it's different and I don't like change" phase... inland products are an important and overdue enhancement. It's a bit busy. Maybe eliminating one product like wind field would help?

There was a lightning strike at 10:49 PM, waves from vertical bolts hit your eardrum at once, thunder is known to be louder in winter/early spring... yet here we are again ignoring the overwhelming evidence and playing dumb on the internet because it's 2026.

This is the correct take. But it's a reaction to media coverage, both legacy and influencer hype, so there's some culpability here. We also live in a performative timeline in which many are looking for a reason to overreact.

( #NWSSPC): Here at the Storm Prediction Center, we dig deep into the data to do the best possible analysis of the storm threat. Even in 2026, this sometimes involves putting pencil to paper to do hand surface analysis. This is what the morning map looks like today. #USwx #wx #wxsky

People are so desperate to bring meaning to what they see that they end up inadvertently sabotaging an expert to get there. This is exactly what answering the traffic tip line during rush hour is like these days—any useful calls are buried in BS, conjecture, or small town nonsense.
