It's probably already been said but remembering exactly how to pronounce Isaias from 2020 is another way to measure how ridiculously fast time seems to have passed.

Air Force stepping up their pollution this evening. Might as well do some sky writing if there's no other accomplishment when you touchdown

I hear you. Like Secret Service, they can do "selective enforcement" and there's been a lot more of that lately

I was pulled over by USPP in Petworth last week and immediately surrounded by ICE and CPB. The reason cited for the stop was allegedly expired tags. After a brief interrogation, the officer claimed that he accidentally mistyped the plate prior to the stop.

The federal helo pollution is noticeably terrible these days, particularly the air taxi practice from Andrews. Most of it operates at lower altitudes than local PD and private medical. As for the Eagle, USPP is chomping at the bit to launch that thing for any number of reasons.

This one is rocking the car. A tree just came down in the space next to me. #dcwx

This is what living next door to a 30 megawatt data center sounds like.

I wonder if boomers felt this way when they found out we weren't alive for Kennedy, Nixon, etc or if this is this a new form of self-loathing

tbh was hoping someone would throw the sucker punch you shouldn't be outside during distant lightning to which was ready to respond "thunder didn't roar, stayed outdoors"

I just got some lightning + look at me footage on the court. Thanks for understanding.

More unrealistically and controversially, tornadoes would be categorized like tropical systems with nomenclature that differentiates spin-ups from higher-end tornadoes, more like the threat that the word conjures

Dave Dildine @dildinedave.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
So many tornado warning takes, so little time but I've always wished the the criteria for warnings was stricter so that QLCS, shelf gustnados, and other brief spin-ups are covered by SVR

Broad Branch Road NW doing its thing
Soapstone Branch overtops Broad Branch Road NW, sending brown and white water rapids spilling over a wall and into Rock Creek. A nearby "Road Flooded" warning beacon is dark despite dangerous, swift water racing underneath it.

I'm somewhat surprised by just how acrid everything looks and smells this time. Warm white balance, no filter.

This. Whenever I visit a new city, I study the major roads ahead of time and then try to drive as much as possible without help from apps, briefly peeking if needed.

A capstone lightning bolt during the Fourth of July fireworks, facing south on Connecticut Avenue from Dupont Circle.
A jagged cloud-to-ground lightning bolt streaks directly behind a bright cluster of fireworks bursting above the darkened silhouette of the Washington D.C. skyline. The bottom of the bolt near the ground is tinged orange as it enters the smoke plume below the fireworks.

Tricky with lots of irregular fireworks brightness and infrequent bolts so tonight's were mostly rapid 2-4" exposures with a higher aperture.

Northbound traffic on I-97 gets around the damage in the grass on the median. Future diversion possible. The July 2012 heat wave caused a concrete section of Route 50 near Bowie to buckle. Climate change and aging infrastructure make failures like this more likely.

The extreme heat has just led to a concrete section of I-97 in Maryland buckling north of Benfield Boulevard. The concrete blowout extends across the travel lanes from shoulder to shoulder. @ianlivingston.bsky.social

Everything you ever needed to know about the typical DC 100-degree day (100 or plus) in one chart. Somewhat interestingly, the hourly average never hits 100 but there are obs in between hourly reports as well. Only June days may have a bit different structure will try to check. #dcwx #vawx
The progression of the "typical" day reaching 100 degrees or more. Benchmarks include 90 by 11a and 95 by 1p.

The old, precast concrete panel broke off an elevated portion of the retaining wall beneath the bridge beams. A DDOT contractor remains in right lane today.

In DC, a big slab of concrete fell off a bridge/retaining wall onto I-395 under 7th Street SW earlier today. Similar occurrence in NYC on the Trans-Manhattan Expressway earlier this month.

Over the winter, I decided I was going to reintroduce this into my lexicon this year. I even started rehearsing rebuttals to pedantic meteorologists. I remember being young and hearing relatives use the phrase. It has its place beyond nostalgia.

All avenues and streets around the Lincoln and WWII memorials closed for a presidential tour of the not so blue Reflecting Pool. The motorcade just drove down into the empty basin.

Update: A living person looked at this and dismissed it in the spot. Moral? Don't just assume you're guilty and pay a fine that could have been wrongly assessed. Auto enforcement could, in utopia, be good but there are problems with it.
