“‘Learning happens as a consequence of cognitive processing. Cognitive processing is typically effortful, & that’s what AI effectively removes,’ says cognitive psychologist Daniel Willingham at UVA. ‘People are really worried about that’.”🧪
“And science - in which people need to critically evaluate theories and data - is one important area that's under threat from the Al revolution in large language models (LLMs). "There is a risk that students outsource precisely the activities through which scientific thinking develops: formulating hypotheses, interpreting evidence, considering alternatives and struggling with uncertainty," says Thomas Nygren, who studies education and critical thinking at Uppsala University in Sweden.”

As a political concept, the Planetary isn’t just an incremental addition to the social scientific toolkit, but instead deranges every traditional category — the citizen, the nation, the state, freedom, and indeed the political itself. My latest: www.theideasletter.org/essay/the-po...

TODAY from 10 am to 2 pm at the Beaverton (Oregon) Public Library there will be a Gaza vigil with an emphasis on singing together. I'll also play some less sing-along kinds of songs, too. Come to Beaverton if you can, and bring your voice, along with banners and signs!

People critical of AI generally lead with "I'm fine with AI for science and medical research, but I don't want it used to surveil us, kill people, replace artists, or make us dumber and less connected".

What I don't want to say is that we are individually at fault and must subject ourselves to weird austerity to balance our destructive society. I think it means a lot more collectivism: sharing resources, doing things together, and taking back our economy and governance from organized greed.

There are so many amazing people trying to live differently and showing others how to do it - I want us to be open to the possibility that we could join them, and to really consider what living in a way we are actually proud of would look like piece by piece, day to day.

Racist idealism about more sustainable ways of life suppresses our imagination and makes us less open to the idea that we could do that, too - which in turn stifles our curiosity about what makes more sustainable ways of life so difficult to cultivate.

Less industrialized ways of life are exoticized - paradoxically wisely in step with nature, yet irretrievably naive. Somehow they are often idealized as both healthier, yet medically backward. Skilled, yet primitive. Like us, but alien. The flattering parts mean many people don't clock the racism.

We all have a way of life, but are we proud of it? Is it dignified and connected to where we live? Does it lift up and involve those around us? Is it sustainable? Mine is often unconsciously wasteful, tuned to an economy focused on consumption over stewardship. I'm trying to be better every day.

What is your way of life? I didn't really think about it when I was younger, but now I think about it all the time. When we learn about other cultures, we learn about the ways of life that characterize those people in that place. How real places inform livelihood and how the ecosystems connect.

So many people feel politically lost, and I think it is in part because many of us don't really know how our communities work - so we don't know how to change them. If you feel lost, try it: write out a map for any issue you care about. That might be all it takes to spur your political imagination.

Lionel @digiacom.ratwaysanctuary.org · 07/09/2026
Power mapping is a tool for activists to organize themselves, identify partners and opportunities, and develop strategies and tactics independently. Sometimes it leads you to decide to join an existing effort started by someone else; other times, you might find you'll want to start something new.
100
Lionel @digiacom.ratwaysanctuary.org · 07/09/2026
It may be intimidating or embarrassing at first since many of us don't know how our communities work; where things are done, who's involved, and how decisions get made. You may need to research. Your first map won't be perfect, and you'll improve it as you try and learn things about your community.

Lionel @digiacom.ratwaysanctuary.org · 07/09/2026
Starting a power map is simple. On a piece of paper: 1. Write the issue/outcome you want in the center. 2. Brainstorm stakeholders along two axis: up/down is influence (decision-makers at the top) and right/left is alignment (allies on the right and opposition on the left). That's the basics!

Lionel @digiacom.ratwaysanctuary.org · 07/09/2026
Been thinking a lot about power mapping recently. It really is a core civic skill, but we so rarely practice it on an individual basis. Perhaps that's because it benefits so much from group intelligence. It really is one of the first steps to turning frustration into civic action.

My sabbatical ended today. I've has three months off of using AI for work, and I miss being AI-free already 🥲 With that I'm dusting off my AI blog to keep advocating against it from the professional side. If my industry insists on using it, I want to put that experience to good use.

Ultimately, the whole value proposition of AI agents relies in the same features which pose risk - flexible, universal contextual generation. Agentic harnesses introduce some mitigation, but also new recursive risks. Instead of depending on AI, let's do stuff ourselves. It's worth it I promise.

Lionel @digiacom.ratwaysanctuary.org · 12/08/2026
The question I want to ask: "Which policies and procedures were supposed to identify and mitigate risks like these? Why did they fail, and is it possible they'll always fail?" Saying an AI system can "go rogue" sheds accountability belonging to the decision makers, system architects, and operators.

A gray rat adventurer jumping in the air and raising their sword triumphantly amid black tentacles from below with a bright star motif in a purple sky above. The character has a green cloak, a flying beetle friend, and an isopod on their shoulder, and is gripping a crystal rosary in their left hand close to their chest. A bright reflection glints off the blade of their sword and their mouth is open as they look straight up into the sky.
