This finding adds to our understanding of the control of bimanual movements in the human brain: Each hemisphere can independently control the contralateral hand, while modulating what it does based on the ipsilateral movement.

During bimanual movements, both the contra-lateral movement and the (non-linear) bimanual combination is encoded. But the representation of the ipsilateral hand (which is strong during unimanual movements) disappears! The traditional bimanual congruency effect is present in higher-level areas.

Natural behavior unfolds as a continuous stream of actions. Because these actions often occur in rapid succession, the brain must prepare multiple future actions while the current action is being executed. Our TICS piece explores how this works. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

We started studying sequence learning by looking into how a fixed sequence is learned. However, in real life, the problem for the brain is to put together flexible sequences on the fly - which provides a completely new perspective: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... With @andpru.bsky.social

I agree - the missing bit is to run large enough studies to test which part of the task-related organization relates to individual differences. For this we need more collaborative studies with overlapping task sets!

The main disadvantage in excluding negative reliabilities is two-fold: first there are many datasets for which the MLE still holds they have signal. Second for a group bootstrap your confidence bounds get too tight. If you have no signal the ci should be [-1,1] so you know that you don’t know.

Now you can test whether the correlation between two fMRI activity patterns smaller than one, or if the correlation changed with learning. Here a Jupyter notebook on how do it: pcm-toolbox-python.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ex...

After testing MANY possible ways of testing hypotheses r<1 or r1<r2, we find that using a group-estimate combined with a subject-wide bootstrap is better than other methods. Not perfect (and we show where the problems lie), but much better than many other approaches you see in the literature.

In the paper we derive the maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE). For low signal, the MLE increasingly starts hitting the boundary of r=1 or r=-1. These cases are still informative, but can lead to reliabilities that are smaller than 0 (black dots).

Most people probably know that you can calculate a noise-ceiling for a correlation (the geometric mean of the reliabilities of the two things you are correlating). But what do you do with correlations that are higher than the noise ceiling? What do you do when reliabilities are negative?

Jörn Diedrichsen @diedrichsenjorn.bsky.social · 26/03/2026
How similar are two activity patterns? We all know that low correlations don't mean that they are necessarily dissimilar – our measurements could be noisy. So how do you correct for this? Our slightly nerdy, but hopefully useful preprint takes a deep dive: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

@carobellum.bsky.social really wanted to know how well resting-state correlations can predict which areas co-activate over a wide array of tasks. It turns out that you are better off running a short Multi-task battery, even if the tasks are completely different from the ones you want to predict!
