L'image figure une coupure de presse intitulée « La grande misère de nos savants : une visite à M. Lecomte, professeur au Muséum, membre de l'Institut ». Le texte est le suivant : « Au Muséum, il y a les collections, les "archives de la nature". Nous en avons parlé, et nous avons dit l'anxiété du grand savant, M. Mangin, en face de la ruine qui menace l'établissement qu'il dirige avec un zèle si attentif.
Mais il y a aussi les laboratoires. Peut-être le public ne sait-il pas assez l'importance mondiale et l'histoire glorieuse de ce centre de recherches. C'est peut-être à ces lieux que s'attachent les plus grands noms de la science moderne. Sans compter que les "chercheurs du Muséum" vivent au plus près de la vie, de ses réalités et de ses besoins. N'est-ce pas l'un d'entre eux, et des plus illustres, le vieux Chevreul, qui inventa les bougies stéariques, grâce à quoi disparut l'antique chandelle de nos pères !
Il est bon de savoir cela, car il est bon que chacun touche du doigt les immédiates nécessités de la science.
Aujourd hui, comme autrefois, on travaille au Muséum. Mais, hélas. c'est là peut-être que lon travaille au sein des pires difficultés. On travaille dans les ruines et sans argent. Et l'on ne perd point courage. Vola qui donne à réfléchir : que ne ferait-on point si les conditions de la grande tâche étaient améliorées ? Il est beau d'admirer l'abnégation de nos savants ; il vaudrait mieux leur venir en aide. Nous ne cesserons point de le répéter. »
