LNG Canada Phase 2 would double output to 30 million tonnes a year, while global gas demand falls and a glut approaches. And they want to expand before proving Phase 1 is safe: its flaring already exceeds B.C. permits. Real leadership means scaling up clean energy, not doubling down fracked gas.

🔥If we use public dollars to electrify all these LNG exports, BC’s climate pollution will still increase by ~13 million tonnes. 🔥When the gas is finally burned overseas, add another ~130 million tonnes of climate pollution.

Throwing billions in public money behind a pipeline at a time of climate breakdown – while sweeping aside environmental protections, meaningful Indigenous consultation and workers’ right to strike – is absolutely not in the national interest.

The oil industry is unwilling to pay for this pipeline because even they know the world is moving away from fossil fuels. This project leaves Canadians bearing all the risks of a bad investment without any of the rewards.

Carney tells us that among the criteria for a project being designated in the national interest, the major projects office considers whether the project “contributes to Canadas clean growth and climate goals.” And a BITUMEN PIPELINE PASSED THIS TEST? Then the test is bullshit.

Here's Green Party leader Emily Lowan's response to the LNG Canada Phase 2 news
Statement from Emily Lowan on LNG Canada Phase 2

Lək̓ʔəŋən [LEKWUNGEN] TERRITORY / VICTORIA, B.C. — "I’m deeply disappointed to see LNG Canada Phase 2 move ahead with the Final Investment Decision—and to see both the BC NDP, Conservatives all applaud this move, while committing to further expansion of oil and gas throughout our province.

LNG Canada is an entirely foreign-owned project. It is owned by Shell, one of the most profitable companies in history, several foreign state-owned oil companies, and US private equity. LNG Canada’s owners also own the fracking operations in the Peace that feed the project. The profits from LNG development flow directly to shareholders and governments abroad, while the costs stay here. Families in Kitimat and Terrace are already living with the health effects: dirtier air, rising asthma rates, and rogue flares lighting up the sky. And for all the public money and all the risk, Phase 2 will create a maximum of 150 permanent jobs.

These are nation-draining projects, and the BC Greens oppose taxpayer handouts to foreign investors. Every public dollar we pour into them digs us a deeper hole. That money should be building Canadian-owned industries that move our economy up the value chain.

British Columbians deserve a better future than endless wildfire-filled summers, and projects that never pay off. The BC Greens will put that money to work here instead—building out renewable energy, backed by good union jobs that don't disappear the moment a foreign shareholder changes their mind. Power that's owned by our communities, not leased from a pipeline. Energy that brings our bills down instead of tying them to a roller coaster gas price.

My cartoon in the Sept 18 Hamilton Spectator: www.thespec.com/opinion/edit...
This political cartoon by Graeme MacKay for The Hamilton Spectator criticizes Donald Trump's foreign and domestic policies by contrasting his disruptive actions with his dramatic reaction to international cooperation. On the left, six small panels depict controversial events linked to Trump: the January 6 Capitol attack with MAGA and Confederate flags; a military drone bombing a school in Iran; an asylum seeker being kicked out; and Trump tearing up the UN Climate Agreement and the USMCA, while warmly embracing Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un. On the right, a giant Trump points aggressively at smaller figures of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and EU President Ursula von der Leyen shaking hands, loudly declaring their alliance a "HOSTILE ACT!"
