The UT-Austin Core Curriculum Task Force is requiring that Gen Ed courses draw 50% of their readings from this list of 50. Unfortunately, it seems to think that the “Great Questions of Human Life” can only be explored through the canon of Western civ (token exception: Confucius).

This is really the only one that makes sense to me too-- someone trying to win some easy points or stand out to higher-ups (interestingly, a striking parallel with how outlandish local policies often happen in the Mainland too). bsky.app/profile/defr...

The policy was quickly revoked and waved off as a draft that got published before revision, but as someone who studied this for a decade, even I find this one bizarre since it banned Cantonese but not English?

The obvious question for me is WHY such a thing would be required in the first place. The most likely answer (and indeed the only one I can think of): someone in the production chain thought it would be more patriotic. Or would make the "patriots" happy.

I read in an essay, and it really stuck with me, the crushing realization that if our students could easily just forego learning and cheat, a shockingly high number of them will. And while I agree with you on the whole, I also don't want to completely negate the choice aspect of it all.
111
Gina Anne Tam @dgtam86.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
I'm also a little less sympathetic with the "using AI for a tight deadline," even if I think its toxic work culture. Students do have choices. When students struggled with deadlines in the past, they talked to professors, maybe turned in a less-than-stellar essay, etc. They didn't, on whole, cheat.

Gina Anne Tam @dgtam86.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
So maybe instead of crushing workloads, its that the ends justify any means, and the ends is never learning for learning's sake. Its adjacent to what you're saying: there is a belief that anything <100 is failure, and thus using AI is smart-- but I dont think students now have more work than before
120
Gina Anne Tam @dgtam86.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
So the amount of work isn't increasing (and I don't think its crushing). BUT they have an increasing STRIKING intolerance for anything besides As and 100s. So it can feel like the workload is crushing, since they want perfection, but there's an unwillingness to triage and prioritize.
140
Gina Anne Tam @dgtam86.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
I see this slightly differently. I agree with the main point-- my students tend to prioritize efficiency and results over self-care, taking time to think through things or dealing w/ the friction of learning. But my students arent taking more classes than 20 years ago (actually they're taking fewer)

Put another way, _people_ promoting the urgent use of “AI” in the military and offloading their responsibilities to a machine … could have started a war. Per reporting, a chatbot (predictably) produced false output. An analyst translated it into a claim, and some number of others didn’t check.

Lets even set aside the broader societal harms. Its existence sucks for me personally. Teaching is less joyful. Reading student writing is less joyful. I waste so much time reading AI slop and then meeting w/ students about it. I've never felt this kind of despair teaching. Its not worth it

I'll respond to this in good faith. I'm sure this person could find a new way for an AI subscription to improve my life. But its existence has already made my job and my teaching DEMONSTRABLY worse. I do not believe this hypothetical improvement will offset the way it has destroyed my pedagogy
