(i think joe cruz's nyt piece, which acknowledges that "there will be challenges of scale", is perfectly fine. what's deeply annoying is the nyt printing 1000 of these pieces on teaching by Williams profs for every one piece on teaching by a CUNY prof)

there are a hundred different ways to teach an excellent humanities course to 13 students. technology has only augmented the diversity of potentially edifying pedagogical approaches at ivies and fancy SLACs. these facts are basically irrelevant to my job as a humanities prof at a public university

this rules iff there are fewer spots than prize winners and it leads to an extremely petty rivalry between a chemist and an economist who would otherwise never meet

makes sense. ryle isnt as silly about subjective experience as people like to make out, but i wouldnt go so far as to say that he's worth reading on that topic

Devin Curry @devinsanchezcurry.com · 23/09/2026
ryle explicitly denied having gotten to the bottom of the issue(s), but the achievement of the book is to draw out a bunch of the subtleties there (at least as much as it is to refute dualism or anything like that)

Devin Curry @devinsanchezcurry.com · 23/09/2026
no, definitely doesn't follow that performance is all there is. rather, the whole book is about how the distinction is (or at least a host of nearby distinctions are) subtle and vexing

New paper! “Order of Explanation: Having it Both Ways” is now forthcoming in Noûs. It’s been a really fun paper to write and I’m stoked to share it.

when we met at a conference as grad students, jake asked a great question about my anti-fodor talk, listened to my reply, and then declared "you're, like, my arch-nemesis" afraid the common ground we've since achieved can only mean we've gotten old

This is a fabulous volume. I enjoyed the chance to think about how episodic memory fits into standard phil mind (spoiler: it doesn’t), and the other chapters are are all so fun and creative. A testament tk Devin and Louise’s lovely vision of philosophy of mind today. Highly recommend!
