Some of the wrongest in politics are “popularists,” who say public opinion can’t be changed, so politicians should never try to lead, only follow polls. This meant treating 2024 as permanent, conceding on immigration and other things. But as @gregsargent.bsky.social writes, the opposite’s working.

They’re not defending Eric Schmitt so much as defending the conspiracy theory defense of Trump’s coup attempt. By mixing up sports teams when lying to discredit Jack Smith, Schmitt made an error that cannot stand: instantly disproven on something so easy to grasp that insinuation doesn’t work.

Democrats warned that Trump would spend his term inventing criminal charges against his enemies. In reality, he's only done that to a few people and has mostly focused on killing criminal investigations into his allies and letting them out of jail. Where does he go for his apology?

What stands out with Eric Schmitt flopping so badly is these conspiracy theories need very little to sell. Two people the right has already cast as villains appearing in the same place —just same state or country will do—is usually enough. But this one was instantly false in such an obvious way.

Trump, the GOP, right-wing media, and the Online Right have had remarkable success with vague insinuation and repetition. Their target audience—which includes not only Trump voters, but mainstream media—love running with insinuation, and treating it as on par with, sometimes greater than, facts.

"Hunter Biden was on a board in Ukraine" was enough to whatabout away Trump family corruption And "Twitter made exceptions for Trump but got a request from a Dem they rejected" was enough to "prove" bias *against* the right So "Smith was in Georgia, where Fanny Willis is" should've been enough too

Buying fast food for my family, it’s over $50, which feels like a lot. Not unreasonable from the restaurant, but like going out to dinner, not grabbing something cheap. So I looked up fast food prices, and they’ve risen faster than inflation. Add that to the why people say stuff’s expensive list.

Smith steered clear of contact with Willis because he had the good sense to not want to touch that mess with a ten-foot pole. But there's nothing inherently wrong with federal and state prosecutors communicating about related cases they're pursuing against the same defendant. Happens all the time.

The Schmitt thing is onion layers of dumb. Even if Smith had gone to a game in Atlanta it's still an insane leap from that to he was secretly meeting Willis. And chose to use a basketball game as an elaborate cover? Talking to Willis wouldn't necessarily be improper anyway!

Republicans have called for the former special counsel to be criminally prosecuted. One Republican senator accused Mr. Smith of perjury, though the accusation appeared to be based on a misunderstanding.

“just incredible how people paid to write about politics for major publications can be more ignorant than random twitter users who didn't have to search hard to find this”

Conor Friedersdorf, 9/21/26 “Maybe I saw it and forgot. Or maybe I wasn't on X that week. Climate change is as straightforward as it gets: Democrats vote to address it and Republicans vote not to. There's a weird tic among the pundit class where they think saying "it's more complicated than that" is the intelligent stance on everything but sometimes it's not complicated!

On the one hand, conservatives deny climate change exists and oppose policies to address it. On the other hand, liberals haven’t convinced conservatives that climate change exists and haven’t offered pain-free solutions. Hence, it’s complicated.
