Microbial communities don’t just decline as ecosystems age. They reorganize. Our study shows that older ecosystems harbor smaller but more connected microbial communities with greater genetic potential for nutrient cycling. #soilmicrobiology #fungalgenomics onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Ancient soils may lose biodiversity, but do they lose function? Using a 400,000-year ecosystem chronosequence, @deuterioh.bsky.social et al. found that microbial communities become more stable and increase genetic potential for N and P cycling despite nutrient depletion. 🔗 doi.org/10.1002/mlf2...

Had a blast putting this video abstract together with colleagues for @zjmaggiexu.bsky.social story in @currentbiology.bsky.social on how the "vampire cell" P. collini builds the perfect feeding trap 👀. Be sure to check out the full paper: www.cell.com/current-biol... www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ikzm...

Excited to share that my postdoc work is now out @cp-cell.bsky.social! A collaborative work with co-lead author Catherine Henderson and others in the lab of @pcleves.bsky.social A deep look into how algae form symbiosis with corals and anemones. 🧵 (1/7) www.cell.com/cell/abstrac...

Co-option of lysosomal machinery shapes the evolution of the intracellular photosymbiosis supporting coral reefs
Corals harbor intracellular algal symbionts in specialized organelles that enable them to build diverse reef ecosystems. Corals and other cnidarians have repeatedly evolved this symbiosis through the ...

Predators do more than consume prey. In #soil, #protist predation triggered shifts in microbial activity linking nutrient cycling with #microbial survival traits, including antimicrobial resistance and genetic mobility pathways. @dishant205.bsky.social pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...

New in ES&T: Protist predation rapidly altered soil microbial community structure and increased the expression of N and P cycling genes, antibiotic resistance genes, virulence factors, and mobile genetic elements. #SoilMicrobiology #Protists #MicrobialEcology pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...

Protist Predation Rapidly Reshapes Soil Microbial Gene Expression Linked to Nutrient Processing, Resistance, Virulence, and Gene Mobility Traits
Protists are ubiquitous soil predators that regulate bacterial communities and biogeochemical cycling, yet how their predation alters expression of nutrient-cycling genes and traits linked to antibiot...

Americans are about to discover how science agencies fund universities. In both red and blue states. Slashing science = slashing jobs. Period.
