Do you know the temptation to write just a "quick paper" because you have "almost all the data anyway". I yielded in part thanks to @jonasbornemann.bsky.social, and of course this became one of those notorious side-projects that turn into your main project for a while. Erm, I mean for two and a […]

Kaart van Europa die aangeeft hoeveel procent van de inwoners het (zeer) eens is met de stelling: "One of my main goals in life is to make my parents proud”

Nederland zit op 62,9%, Frankrijk op 71,4. Finland is de allerlaagste met 25,6%.

Re. the security breach of US #Yemen war plans: It seems I've been attributing the US administration with a level of logic and insight that it may not in fact possess. Leaving aside the incompetence of the breach and the abhorrent use of playful emojis to celebrate bombs that killed dozens of civilians, I'm struck by how unclear the US rationale was in the run-up to bombing Yemen.
• Is it to restore freedom of navigation through the Red Sea? Allegedly. But JD
Vance points out that only 3% of US trade runs through Suez.
• Is it to help Europe? Hardly. Europeans are described as free-loading and pathetic. But, since they benefit, they'll get the bill.
• Is it to send a warning to Iran? Apparently not. Raising the spectre of Iran is merely advised as a public relations ploy.
• Is it to weaken the Houthis and hence help regional allies ahead of a likely flare up of Yemen's civil war? No. "It [is] not about the Houthis" the chat tells us.
• Is it to re-establish deterrence? That's the claim. But the Houthis have been bombed tens of thousands of times over the past decade and remain undeterred. So one is left thinking that the bombing is largely performative: let's show the world - we'll do it because we can.

From a schoolbook that was already old when I used it.
Aphotograph showing two men in office attire leaning over the console of an old school mainframe computer. the console looks like the combination of a desk and a cupboard. In the background you see large cupboard-shaped mainframe computers with electromagnetic tape. The caption reads (translation): The German IT center in Darmstadt is furnished with a large computing machine of the IBM 790 type. Here, two technicians are checking the device at the console.
