You’d think. Were working to shape these asks to be more measurable so hopefully we can have a little more detail in the coming months

We’re asking for wider sidewalks including dedicated space for scooters and trash. We want to see welcoming spaces to stop and gather, and we want curb space to prioritize the critical needs like loading and delivery over car parking

Last week we talked to a bunch of neighbors and heard their great ideas for what they want out of us. We are hearing that they want People-oriented places, Accessible sidewalks, more events/activities, and improving the loading/parking chaos. Read here: destinationpike.com/ideas-from-a...
Two pages of sticky notes both answering the question “Why do you love these streets?” With answers like “the people” or “madness” or “so much to look at”

Happy that so many people are talking about removing vehicles from our public streets & giving more space to people. @ohtheurbanity.bsky.social asks the follow-up question, "Are Pedestrian Streets Actually Good for Business?" h/t @uoftcities.bsky.social @canurb.bsky.social youtu.be/bC1OChn33aY?...

New York has a similar problem with trash to Pike/Pike. Maybe we can learn from how this works there 👀

Theres space for a stage, and enough room to enjoy, or to just walk or roll right past

Families are out, kids are out, older couples are out. Folks in wheelchairs and on bikes are passing through. This space is full of people coming to enjoy and visit these businesses. This feels like a destination!

This street performer has drawn a crowd in the area soon to be opened back up to cars. This will save drivers 4 blocks in one direction when getting to this specific garage underneath. Note the pedestrian plaza just a block behind where the street ends

And some powerful business groups have been pushing for this cross street to be reopened for a more direct route to their garage. This cross street, the only one closed, has been used for popup soccer matches and ends at another pedestrian plaza near this garage entrance

Busses have been moved off Granville to parallel streets, causing some bus delays, and taking potential shoppers away from Granville street

I think i can find some similarities between the businesses of Pike-Pine and Granville Street 😊 #DavesHotChicken Pedestrianization has been great for business at local thrift and vintage shops too

But Granville isnt perfect. They’ve had problems with unmanaged SROs that opened up during covid. All the activities and people have pushed the marginalized communities off the streets and made them feel unwelcome in the lively space

Even before pedestrianizing Granville Street for the summer, they had extremely wide sidewalks and a narrow roadway. A few parking spaces were on each block at sidewalk height, including this space still being used by a permitted food truck

They’re working hard to invite people down to enjoy the street with seating, DJs, games, and lots of outdoor dining/drinking areas. “Every business saw an uptick”

They’ve had great success with local vintage stores like Leo’s. Theyre getting ready to take over the street and host a block long vintage market in the next few weeks

What do you get when you combine 30 markers and two dozen community members? What we found was lively conversation, thoughtful sharing of perspectives, and the ability to find common ground about the future of Destination Pike. Read the whole newsletter here: destinationpike.com/nice-to-meet...
We believe … is that the current sidewalks are being asked to do too much in the current space because there is a desire to use a finite amount of space that results in bottled-necks and accessibility issues

We’ve been listening to the neighborhood. And we keep hearing the same things… our sidewalks are too narrow❗️ Especially when you add the garbage, bike parking, and seating to the equation! We need more space for people 🚶#destinationpike #publicspace #peoplespace

One lesson from the World Cup I think that Seattle neighborhoods would be smart to heed is that refusing to pedestrianize spaces at the heart of neighborhoods meant that people didn’t stop, stay, and spend time there… they just drove on through to places where pedestrians were prioritized.
