Views from working in the very wet subalpine fir-dominant forests northwest of Topley, BC. Quint had a great time, but he was glad to get back in the truck when the time came. That creek was one of two we had to cross, each with its own forty metre deep ravine with 80% slopes. Oct 9, 2026. #BCWild

Those tree ears really jump around in the frying pan when you cook them up. A great surprise during meal preparation.

Found this giant mushroom, sulphur shelf, chicken of the woods [Laetiporus sulphureus] on a dead spruce by a creek on Thursday, October 1 2026, in the wild Topley area of northern BC. About 50 cm wide. A rare autumn fruiting that was still very edible. They usually fruit in July. #BCWild #Fungi

i've edited the posted excerpt to read:

But it’s easy to tell when a reference, a comparison, or a sentence doesn’t belong to a writer. Erudition and style still must be earned. We’ve already grown accustomed to what A.I.’s sleek, space-efficient text sounds like — the flat tone, the pert little summary bits, the repetition, the fluorescent-lit, impersonal mood.

there's two notes, 'Is it?' next to 'sleek, space-efficient' and 'No.' next to the last sentence, which read 'Reading it, you feel you've been through the desert on a horse with no name.'

Ooo, and your little "No" itself was a great ending splash, to prove my point.

Derrick S Denholm @derricksdenholm.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
I agree with your trimming, but the pop culture reference of the "Horse with No Name" was fine, even good. If we do not laugh, shudder, or sparkle at the end of every struggle, thesis, thought, or straight-up paragraph, then what's the point?

Pale pink colour variant of fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifolium) found west of Burns Lake BC, Friday July 24. First time I have seen (or more likely noticed) it in more than 30 years of forestry work. A very ubiquitous plant but not this rare variant.

Your Prime Day reminder that half of Amazon warehouse workers struggle with food & housing costs. A third have had to rely on government assistance like SNAP — which was gutted last year. If Bezos can spend $500M on a yacht, Amazon can afford to treat its workers with dignity.
