Also since you mentioned Italy, I seem to remember they didn’t fair as well in a World Cup elimination game where they faced a red card while up 1-0.

World Cup qualifier match between Italy and Bosnia Herzegovina in which Italy scored in the 15th minute, got a red card in the 41st minute, Bosnia Herzegovina equalized in the 79th minute and won 4-1 on penalties.
