Section 49 of the Representation of the People Bill gives the Electoral Commission power to demand information from councils, including election results, in order to run voter information services. This won't apply to Scotland as things stand, but it hopefully leads the way.

We've added the results of the 7 May town and parish council elections to our blog. 70.3% of seats were won by independent candidates and 11.1% by candidates representing political parties. 19% of seats remain unfilled. democracyclub.org.uk/blog/2026/04...

However, there are polls in most large towns: 67% of town councils have a poll, compared with 13% of parish councils. This includes new town councils in Bournemouth, Broadstone and Poole. Other towns holding elections this year include Sutton Coldfield, Eastleigh, Fleet, Huntingdon, and St Neots.

We've argued for a reform of election notices: - Party emblems should be published on the Statement of Persons Nominated (SoPN). - Withdrawn candidates should not appear on the SoPN. - Electorate and turnout should be published in the declaration of result (perhaps by ballot box).
