Sontag said the rhetoric from US officials was not reflective of a mature democracy. That observation is correct about that, but if there’s an assumption we were mature — that was wrong. And we are less mature today. I don’t know … maybe someday we’ll get tired of falling for dump platitudes.

Like most things Trump, ICE is a grotesque excess of what has previously existed, literally and figuratively a steroid-bloated parody of law enforcement in America

I don’t know vivien3daggers, never interacted with them in any way. But this makes me wonder what they’re doing the last few days. I guess this is because someone put me on a list, and then people use those lists to block all?

Dilemma. My politics are generally far to the left of my sense of strategy for winning and electing sane leaders. As such I recognize my own vulnerability to influence campaigns that foster extremes on both ends of the spectrum.

Here is the finished screenprint made from the film positives in the previous post.
A 16 layer screenprint, approximately 27x21”, in four main colors. Each color has a four tints. The image does not necessarily depict anything specific, while it does riff off of early 20th c. tramp art. It is possible that few will see this, but for me it is a kind of flower.

More film positives for screenprinting, in this case one film cut up into mosaic pieces and then reconstructed onto four separate films (so they can be four colors in the final print). I am printing as well, but they’re still simmering a bit as I figure out color and I don’t want to post them yet.

Texas State Printmaking was asked by Glasstire to make a print for Vincent Valdez, as part of a suite of five prints (5 Texas artists, paired with 5 Texas printers) to celebrate Glasstire’s 25th anniversary. I am very proud of these students that assisted and of the project.

Drawings and/or film positives for screenprinting. This is black oil stick on clear film, used to expose screens for screenprinting. I am very excited about these, even tho they have a ways to go.
This is two film positives, one on top of the other, that will be used to make a screenprint. It is a sort of drawing on transparent film. In this case, it’s also a rubbing with cut paper beneath it. Here it is seen on top of a light box, which shows it how the screen will see it when it’s exposed. This is a film positive that will be used to make a screenprint. A black and white drawing on clear film, made with a broad oil pastel. Cut pieces of paper are beneath the material, so the drawing is also a rubbing. This sheet will be used to expose light sensitive screens for screenprinting.

Decisions made in the moment come down to training and preparation. Clearly ICE and CBP train to escalate, manufacture crisis, provoke, and find the excuse. I wouldn’t put it past them to train explicitly for walking in front of a vehicle (CBP had to explicitly ban this practice in 2010).

A friend that randomly sends me photographs of my work in his house — because he notices how the light changes it — makes me immeasurably happy.
A photograph of a screenprint by Jeffrey Dell, in a domestic setting, with the light of the day swindling. The screenprint shows a sort of rainbow, broken into facets by the accordion gold surface that it’s on. The title is ‘Broken Rainbow’

Every night I see one or two police drones flying in a preset formation above San Marcos, TX. Once there was a private drone very near our house, hovering, and it turned its lights off (like it was trying to not be seen). This ambiguity between police and private drones is a real problem.

Tumblr post from every-lemon

so my spouse is part of a weirdly intense but mostly benign men's workout group that meets at like, 5:30am outside every day, even in winter. they do a lot of burpees and lugging cinder blocks up hills and stuff.
they take turns leading the workouts and tomorrow is his turn. I asked what he was planning. he handed me a sheet of William Carlos William poems from a large stack he'd printed.
I said "what" and he explained, helpfully, "it's a William Carlos William themed workout." I asked what inspired it and he said "l've been planning this for months."

it was a smash hit.
a dozen guys showed up (more than usual). spouse brought a red wheelbarrow and they took turns bringing cinder blocks up the hill with it. then they broke up in teams and did a relay with an "icebox" (cooler filled with 40lbs of ice). at the end he opened the cooler to reveal it was full of beach plum lacroix and all the guys cheered. they drank sparkling water as he read 'approach of winter' out loud.
he was home by 6:30am.

We don't hear much about the Texas 1836 project these days. Maybe because the 1836 Texas Constitution went to great lengths to write down how Texas is an explicitly white supremacist project, with slavery at the very heart of its founding.
SEC. 9. All persons of color who were slaves for life previous to their emigration to Texas, and who are now held in bondage, shall remain in the like state of servitude, provide the said slave shall be the bona fide property of the person so holding said slave as aforesaid. Congress shall pass no laws to prohibit emigrants from the United States of America from bringing their slaves into the Republic with them, and holding them by the same tenure by which such slaves were held in the United States; nor shall Congress have power to emancipate slaves; nor shall any slave-holder be allowed to emancipate his or her slave or slaves, without the consent of Congress, unless he or she shall send his or her slave or slaves without the limits of the Republic. No free person of African descent, either in whole or in part, shall be permitted to reside permanently in the Republic, without the consent of Congress, and the importation or admission of Africans or negroes into this Republic, excepting from the United States of America, is forever prohibited, and declared to be piracy.

SEC. 10. All persons, (Africans, the descendants of Africans, and Indians excepted,) who were residing in Texas on the day of the Declaration of Independence, shall be considered citizens of the Republic, and entitled to all the privileges of such.
