#WIPSnips #WritingCommunity Abbas (the beautiful man on the left, drawn by the amazing @deliriummacabre.bsky.social ) has multiple jobs. One of them is being a gangster.

He resumed his march across the bridge, slowing the pace to thoroughly enjoy his smoke. He was about to finish it, when he reached his destination. Abbas rested one hand on the knife, and knocked with the other, cigarette still in his mouth. He heard movement behind the door. There was a soft click, and it was opened by a man in his mid-thirties. He seemed to have been woken up by his knocking, so Abbas saw his face go from sleepy and confused, to fully awake and absolutely terrified. He extinguished the cigarette on the wall.
‘Hi Phil, may I come in?’ Abbas walked inside, without waiting for permission, forcing him to back away.
The man stumbled over his own feet, but he didn’t resist. Nobody was stupid enough to try and harm the only Healer the Roots had. Even if said Healer was about to collect a debt.

#WIPSnips #WritingCommunity A bit of flashback for today's word. I like writing about Wraiths.

He felt his scarf snag onto the railing when he scaled the fence, and heard it rip. He landed on the other side, rolling on the wet snow. The heavy clanging of the approaching Wraith echoed in the yard. He looked around, frantically searching for an exit, and noticed a small window leading to a cellar nearby. He dashed towards it, when he heard the metal gate groan, as the Wraith bent it to get through.
He slipped into the building, avoiding the sharp talons by a hair’s breadth. Long claws reached towards him, flailing in the air. The Wraith shrieked again. He ran through the cellar, heading towards the stairs leading up. Another shriek answered from a distance.

#WIPSnips #WritingCommunity Fun fact, I once conducted an audit on a site that had a leaky faucet next door to the office I was in, and I almost lost my mind there.

Chapter 4
The constant tapping of the water dripping from the leaky faucet was driving him insane; the rhythmic sound drilling a hole in his head when he tried to focus. Since he came to this hovel, the water tapped 1573 times. He would not mind if the sound was in tune with the ticking of a clock, but of course it had to drip slightly slower than every second.
The stiff wooden chair he sat on offered no comfort while he leaned over a stack of paper covered in messy scribbles. Not only was he forced to work in such abysmal conditions, the data he had to go through was as bad as the environment. He was getting irritated.
He took a deep sigh and straightened his back. His neck bones cracked softly, relieving some of the tension in his shoulders. He pulled the lamp closer, squinting at the sum at the bottom of a column. He traced his index finger on the data on top, then put in on the final number again. He tapped it in the rhythm of the drops of water, writing a note down in a leather-bound notebook.
The distributor, who this whole time sat stiffly across the table, shifted uncomfortably in his chair. Evan looked at him.

#WIPSnips #WritingCommunity Great word today for my completely normal procedure of healing dying Filigree Trees.

There was never a pleasant contact with the Rot. The Healers were the only ones able to survive touching it, but not without paying a price. The moment he touched it, his body convulsed in response. Abbas felt it immediately try to suck him in, its cold tendrils reaching under his skin and entering his veins. Abbas gasped and pulled back, resisting the pull of the Rot. His heart beat loudly in his chest when he focused his energy on the tar, pulling on it, ripping it out of the Filigree Tree. The time seemed to have stopped when he separated single threads, untying the tangled connections and removing the Rot. The more he untangled, the more slithered into his body, filling his lungs with black ichor. He tasted the bitter tar and gasped, trying to draw air. But instead, he inhaled more Rot. He was drowning in it.

#WIPSnips #WritingCommunity I'm sure he's a lovely, kingdom-loving citizen. Nothing to worry about.

He was wearing a bizarre amalgamation of clothes with visible, messy stitches keeping them in one piece. Different fabrics clashed together, coming out of the back part of his kilt. His shirt was ripped in multiple places, so probably that’s why it was layered on top of another one, also ripped. He wore heavy boots that seemed to have been spray-painted on. The only piece of clothing he wore that didn’t look entirely home-made was his puffy jacket, which nevertheless looked very worn, covered in patches, its cuffs frayed at seams. On top of all that, the man was also wearing a necklace made out of pretty much everything you could find on the street. Roberto noticed pieces of colourful glass, small rocks, feathers, and even a few different buttons from guard uniforms. Somehow he didn’t think it was because the prisoner had so much respect for the law, he wanted to keep its symbol close to his heart. It looked more like a scalp collection.

After finding the photograph he was looking for, Chris wasted no time. With his migraine momentarily gone, he packed his camera and a list of things Nadya wanted him to get, and left the loft, climbing onto the roof above the cafe. He slid down onto the lower roofing of the arcade, and started running on top of it, gaining momentum to jump off, grabbing onto the railing of a balcony across the narrow alleyway. The cold metal briefly stuck to his gloved hands.
He lifted himself up, and climbed higher, getting on top of the house. A group of pigeons broke into flight when he walked across the roof. Chris grabbed a handful of sunflower seeds from his pocket, and threw it on the ground. Two birds flew down from the neighbouring house, enticed by the food. He took out his camera and snapped a photo of them. While he waited for the photograph to develop, he put a few seeds in his mouth and chewed on them for a moment, spitting out the shells.

#WIPSnips Prince Roberto is experiencing first-hand how 'safe' is the area outside the Capital's walls. Also the guards are discussing weather.

‘Shut your mouth,’ hushed the driver, as the transport slowed down. ‘Don’t mention no prince now if you want to keep your job.’ Roberto could hear the window open. ‘Hey Steve, they put you in that freeze on gate duty again? Who did you piss off this time?’
‘A long list of fucks,’ replied the man at the gate. ‘You transporting someone to the Hole?’
‘Nah, just beating traffic to get to the station sooner.’
‘Lucky,’ the guard outside sighed wistfully. ‘Go through. Keep me in your prayers I don’t freeze my arse off here.’
The transport started moving again. A few minutes passed in complete silence. Roberto wondered how deep into the Midgard territory they got, when the guards resumed their conversation.
‘What if we get attacked?’ asked the passenger in a hushed voice. ’I don’t like this.’
‘A blizzard is coming,’ replied the driver. ‘And I’m sure as hell not getting stuck in the cold because I have to be some princeling’s personal chauffeur.’ he snorted. ‘Besides, this is a safe area.’
As soon as he said that, something landed on the roof of the transport with a heavy thud.
