Politicians skirt around it. The media skirts around it. But, we have a very sinister far right, racist problem in the UK. Reform and Restore… two cheeks of the same hideous arse… flooding the zone with their hate, their lies and their howling inadequacy. If they’re our future, we’re done for.

“We deliberately sold as much of our capacity to rich people as we could and forced you to rent it from them, as a way of permanently shrivelling and crippling the scope of democracy” - sounds bad, like people should be in jail. “People are on their phones too much” - way better, highly preferable

Sinister that this spasm of racist rage and “they’re-all-the-same”ism is given so much airtime to grow and fester… a disease spreading fast in the Petri dish of Labour ineffectiveness, media complicity and billionaire-backed corruption. It’ll do us in. And no one in power seems to be able to stop it

Reform is a protest party. A protest against decency, integrity, kindness, expertise, and progress. It's a party of pettiness and hate, and it is made up of petty and hateful people from the grassroots to the very top. What it doesn't have is competence. So good luck with the bins and potholes.

Informed people make choices that are better for them and for society at large. The mission of partisan mass-media is to keep people poorly-informed. This is also why Musk bought Twitter, how Facebook works, and why independent journalism is becoming untenable as a profession.

I’m not sure why we still have a monarch. It seems like a medieval anachronism to me; a demonstration of inherited status and the the pinnacle of an entrenched aristocracy. And I’m really not sure why our monarch has gone to the US to stand next to another man with too much power, land and money.

Almost everything we argue about is a substitute for the thing we should be arguing about: the immense wealth & power of an oligarchic class, which captures governments, ruins lives and wrecks the living planet. This class redirects our rage at scapegoats. To resist its lies is to resist its power.

Reform: an undeniably racist, misogynistic, transphobic, disability-sceptic party with disturbing links to christofascist MAGA… wants to leave the ECHR and scrap the Equality Act, removing our rights and protections. As red flags go, this is the reddest it gets www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

Suella Braverman has promised to scrap the Equality Act if Reform wins the next election (Getty)Dr Paul Martin OBE, the chief executive of the LGBT Foundation, argued that the Equality Act "isn't adding to Britain's challenges - it's part of the solution".
"Without it, people would have fewer protections against discrimination in everyday life, from work and healthcare to education and public services," he warned.
"Equality isn't a 'nice to have' - it's a foundation for a fairer, stronger and healthier Britain.

This post has a horrible "another Brexit was possible" vibe to it, don't you think? Brexit is inherently unworkable by its very nature and by virtue of geography. You can't be right next door to the biggest trading bloc on the planet and expect to still thrive outside of it, period.

You can’t get the Brexit people voted for because it doesn’t exist. It was a con. A prejudiced, arrogant fantasy created by a cynical campaign of dishonesty. This is however the relentless, tedious Brexit reality. An ongoing national scandal. A betrayal of a country by its politicians and media.

Tonight Stekkjastaur, the first of Iceland's 13 Yule Lads, comes down from the mountains. He likes to sneak into the sheep shed to drink milk from the ewes. All the children put a shoe in the window for him to put a treat or a little gift in – if they have been good! The bad children get a potato.
Illustration of Stekkjastaur by Brian Pilkington. He is wearing old timey clothes, has a red hat, and white hair and beard and is trying to mount an Icelandic sheep.

I'm already sick of hearing how "difficult" this decision must have been for the Royals. Wanting to protect a relative is no excuse for years-long reluctance to remove Andrew's titles after credible allegations of abhorrent abuse were revealed. This should've been an obvious & immediate decision.

A persistent insanity in political punditry is the way the left get henpecked to death by the press over the "how" of their policies, whereas the right get to just blurt out a "why" and receive a free pass on the "how" if the "why" seems compelling enough to divorced dads without visitation rights.

Here I am in March 2020 wearing the PPE that was available at the time for frontline services about to see an influx of extremely sick people with SARS-CoV-2 now known as COVID-19. I watched many die. Colleagues died. Michelle Mone should be in jail. And she should only be the first on a long list
A man stands in a hospital corridor in March 2020, fully dressed in early-pandemic personal protective equipment. He wears a disposable blue gown, plastic apron, surgical mask, clear visor with a white strip down the middle, and blue gloves. His trousers and bright blue trainers are visible beneath the gown. Behind him are double wooden doors with "Exit" and "Fire exit" signs, and to the side is a toilet sign. The image captures the stark, improvised feel of frontline PPE at the start of COVID-19.
