Today’s #Halloween movie rec: Dead Set (2008). This is actually a British mini-series, available on Prime. It has a clever, original premise: a group of people are living in a Big Brother type show - cut off from the world - when the zombie outbreak starts. I ❤️ 🧟‍♀️ 🧟‍♂️ 🧟

Re-upping this because (1) I find topics re: #sound and light to be fascinating, and (2) this is a remarkably well-done video explaining a complicated #science subject. Fun facts: humans don't hear sound equally at different frequencies, and also we perceive loudness on a logarithmic scale.

Taco Bell worker just charged me for a random thing on the menu. I said “that’s not what I ordered” and he said “they just upped the prices a lot, so I’m putting it in the system as a lower-price item, but you’ll still get what you ordered.” Viva la revolución!

You definitely don’t need to run it at 600 CFM, probably ever. Running a fan at 100-200 is plenty, and maybe have it run for a little while after you finish cooking. Most good fans have a timer you can set to let it run and then it shuts itself off.

Today’s #Halloween movie rec is one for the kids: Curious George, A Halloween Boo Fest. We used to watch this w/ my son every year. Musical, whimsical, creative. My favorite thing about it is it teaches a lesson (through song!) that sometimes things that are a little scary can be fun.

To mitigate that, programs like #LEED for Homes require that large kitchen exhaust fans (400+ CFM) must have a dedicated make-up air source tied to a switch so a damper opens only when the fan runs. But the best strategy by far is just to install a properly sized kitchen exhaust fan, maybe 200 CFM.
000
Doug King in San Jose @dekgreen.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Lastly there is a safety issue. If there's no make-up air source, running a huge exhaust fan creates a kind of vacuum. Air is pulled in through any openings, including the vents for your furnaces, water heaters, and dryers. This creates a risk of pulling gases and particulates back into the home.

Doug King in San Jose @dekgreen.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
You basically have to re-heat all the air in your home every 20 minutes you run that giant fan. This has air quality implications, too. Without a dedicated make-up air source, the air comes in through little cracks in your walls. The air between the walls of your house isn't the best to breathe.
100
Doug King in San Jose @dekgreen.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
When a fan sucks air out of your house, that air has to come from somewhere. Some math: if your kitchen exhaust pulls 1,000 cubic feet per minute (CFM) that means in a typical 2,000 square foot home the fan will replace all the air in your home after just ~20 minutes. In the winter, that's... bad.

Doug King in San Jose @dekgreen.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
On the topic of kitchen exhaust, a quick note re: large range hoods in #homes. People liked to think huge range hoods mean they have a "professional" kitchen but they're pretty dumb. They're loud, a little dangerous, energy-intensive to use and increase heating by sucking lots of outside air inside.

Today’s #Halloween movie rec: Us (2019). A lot has been made of Jordan Peele's films as allegory / racial commentary but they work as straight-up excellent horror movies. The premise of Us is creepy as hell & the execution is masterful. Scary AF. Also: an all-time great movie poster.

Sones are a unit of measure of loudness that’s industry standard for fans. It’s different from decibels bc it focuses on the human perceptions of sound. This video does an excellent job explaining why sones are a useful unit, separate from decibels.

There are lots of problems w/ kitchen exhaust fans but one huge issue is that people don’t use them bc they can be *annoyingly* loud. #EnergyStar labeled kitchen fans must meet various req’ts related to performance, such as energy and airflow, but also limit on how loud they can be (2 sones).

Today's #Halloween movie recommendation: High Tension (2003). French film in a classic thriller/horror style: two young women in a secluded farmhouse are terrorized. Really well-made, not a conventional slasher, but quite scary. I’m *not* a fan of slashers but I remember really enjoying this movie.

After voting, YIMBY Action leads couldn't reach a consensus on Prop 45, and won't be making an endorsement! This means that not a single YIMBY org in California is endorsing the measure (with one opposed). CEQA "reform" for sprawl & freeways is bad! Glad most of us recognize this. No on 45!

I love that when you ask a person to envision an interesting, nice place to live & work, they generally create a place with no roads or cars - just walkable neighborhoods with beautiful buildings and landscapes. Tomlin created an idealized boutique vacation town (e.g. Zermatt), just w taller bldgs.

The battery cost is the thing that was extraordinarily high. A battery system that had been ~$10k five years ago is now ~$20k.

Watched this again tonight with my 14-yr-old and his friend. Holds up to a third viewing - there’s lots of little things to enjoy. Still a very clever and fresh premise. My son reports that it was a bit scarier than I thought it would be for him, but enjoyed it.

Today's #Halloween movie recommendation: The Cabin in the Woods (2011). A clever twist on classic horror films. Starts out as a bunch of kids about to get killed at a cabin in the woods, then takes a fun turn. Watch with friends. Not terribly scary once it gets going. Avoid trailers/spoilers.

Very cool project in Van Nuys that converted 41 old motels rooms to #affordable #housing & added a new 50-unit bldg on the site of the prior parking lot. These conversions aren't easy, but they got it done. Also includes on-site services for case mgmt, etc. for homeless transitions.

Woh, that's awesome! I'm not sure we can compare US to NLD prices, but that's really good to know. I trust this company, so I don't think I'm being gouged. My instinct is that this is related to the massive AI build-out, though I cannot say with any confidence.

12kW!? Woh, that's a lot of solar. I won't ask what you need all that power for. The PV price I was quoted was good (~$3/W) but the battery was roughly $20k for a 15-kWh system. I was hoping battery prices had come down : (

Got a quote for add'l #solar panels and a 15-kWh battery and holy hell the price was high. I really expected prices to have come down or stayed flat since we first installed our PV system ~5 years ago. I hope this is a local maximum due to the AI build-out. Anyone have insights on this?

As for the finances, there’s no way that a new unproven campus with no infrastructure in a very expensive place will outperform the main, prestigious campus in one of the most affordable cities in America. This is just the myopic Board being lured by the flash of Miami & donor $$.

It’s not possible to just expand CMU into a new city. The faculty, the culture, the City of Pittsburgh itself all contribute to what makes CMU special. This smacks of the hubris of billionaires to think that management, a clever idea, and a strong brand are all that’s needed.

3) There’s no way CMU Miami can be as good as CMU. It’s elite not bc of money or some brilliant administrators. It’s elite bc of its faculty, its culture, and its history. Those things cannot just be replicated. This reflects real hubris (& ignorance) on the part of leadership.
