I was recently introduced to straw.page, a maximalist Geocities-inspired drag-and-drop website builder. Apparently it's most popular with Gen Z, and it makes me so glad to know this sort of spirit lives on. 😄 🧵 A few examples in-thread.

It has its own Steam Deck preset which holds fairly steady around the 50fps mark. I locked it at 30 and used LSFG-VK framegen to get a solid 60 (at the cost of some input lag)

I did try running some Gameboy games through it, that was fun, and it's possible to keep the chiptune DNA depending on the pedal setup (or destroy it completely).

Oh and I'm using an old Android tablet to connect to Patchbox's WiFi network to control the pedal interfaces and cables via browser.

The Pi is running Patchbox + MODEP and I had to manually edit the Jack config to allow two different devices for input and output as I think it expects you to use a single external soundcard for both audio in and out. At that point I loaded it up with reverb, delay, and experimental pedals.

Technical breakdown. I found Sonos do a Line-in Adapter that's stereo and is class compliant, then a simple USBC to USBA converter gets me the audio into the Pi.

The community discovered the detune formula was slightly off in the FM1 and fixed it in custom firmware. It's now identical. 🤯

Late to the party but RaspiMIDIHub and Patchbox OS are pretty magical uses for a Raspberry Pi. raspimidihub.com blokas.io/modep/ It's just a shame they're so expensive right now, unless you have a drawer full of them from abandoned projects.

I'd love it if there was a service where I could hire a Steam Frame to play Half-Life Alyx. Outside of that I have very little interest in VR.

Projects for this week: * Revive a 'dead' PocketCHIP. The NAND on them degrades over time meaning they need reflashing (and the tooling is harder to run on modern systems as the years go by). * Make a Pi Zero powered MIDI hub.

@chris-spann.co.uk Bluetooth MIDI works perfectly between my OP1 and FM1, and I found an Android app that acts as a MIDI host called MIDI Hub. I still need to play with using a Pi as host instead. I let my 8yr old loose on the FM1 and she managed to make sounds I didn't even know were possible!

So I'm going to attempt to make a Pi Zero device that acts as a host and a hub for USB midi devices.
100
Chris Johnson @defaced.dev · 06/09/2026
😅 So far the MIDI toy I've created expects to be connected to a USB host (which is fine with my OP1) and it doesn't have the hardware to act as a host. One option is to wire a TRS port onto the toy and rewrite my software, but I don't have the parts on me.
100
Chris Johnson @defaced.dev · 05/09/2026
First stumbling block. The FM-1 doesn't act as a USB host and the MIDI device I made won't work with it as it expects to be powered and managed by a host device. New plan. Get the soldering iron out.

I bet you could make a tiny ESP32 or RP2040 device that accepts one type of clock and converts to the other though.
000
Chris Johnson @defaced.dev · 05/09/2026
Ah, looking at I don't think it accepts the clock from a PO as it expects only a MIDI clock.
100
Chris Johnson @defaced.dev · 05/09/2026
It's got USB, BLE, and 3.5mm MIDI. I'll be playing with the clock sync later actually.
