First play of Finspan yesterday courtesy of Jamey at Stonemaier games. We had a great time! Streamlined resources and a more interesting and open spatial puzzle make it feel distinct among the “span” games. I think this one will ultimately fit my tastes best of the three.

I got my first game to the table post baby, a solo and first play of Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game! It was really neat. I lost but had fun and felt mentally recharged. Playing games is so important for me, and I'm learning digital games alone isn't enough. Maybe I'm entering a new solo era.

#1 - The Resistance Games that create an agency felt as acutely as The Resistance are few and far between. I was lucky to get to this one as early as I did in my board game exploration. Now it is among the most worn in my collection. Still, my plays of The Resistance were as fun in 2024 as ever.

#2 - Tikal Tikal has a distinct decision space that feels like watching a great, classic movie, but one that is still watchable and enjoyable today on a casual viewing, not just as an important piece of cinema history. Playing Tikal you get the sense that they don’t make ‘em like this anymore.

#3 - Quantum Quantum has a great arc, a generative narrative, and a hero mechanism in the dual purposed movement and combat dice. This movement/combat scheme does everything you would want in a space combat, territory control game – providing strategic and tacitcal depth with no rules overhead.

#4 - Planet Unknown Planet Unknown is distinguished by the interactivity and choice seamlessly added by the central revolving tray, allowing all players to simultaneously pick from the tiles closest to them. Genius. We also love the unhinged variety in the planet and corporation boards.

#5 - Nimalia We love the use of Isle of Skye-style overlaid objectives. (Players will evaluate and score 5 objectives, 3 times each throughout 5 rounds.) It is a perfect match for simple tile placement and pattern building, enabling short-term opportunism and long-term planning in a small box.

#6 - Bunny Kingdom Bunny Kingdom uses straightforward, clean drafting mechanisms, yet still creates a novel decision space to explore. We both found a lot to appreciate in the game from small design choices, like drafting two cards each turn, to the paradigm-shifting, grid-based draft.

#7 - Castle Combo Castle Combo is so fast and light – just 9 turns, choose 1 card each turn – that it works at all is a huge testament to its design and development. But it doesn’t just work, it’s a blast to play, and for that Castle Combo earns our highest kudos.
